When we went up to a cabin in the mountain last month with lots of foliage around, we were pleasantly surprised at how well these walkie talkies work. We were able to keep in touch within a mile from the cabin. We are aware that these will not provide the distance listed, especially in steep terrain with lots of trees blocking the signal. That being said, these work really well, and the sound is clear. The double-charger base is a nice touch. If I leave the radio on, even without using them, the battery lasts about 24hrs.They are certainly not the smallest/most-portable radio around, but for the price you can't beat it.

Midland LXT385VP3 24-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Camouflage) (Pair) Review

Average Reviews:

I honestly have nothing bad to say about these. They work incredibly well--even in areas where we'd have no cell phone reception--and are really easy to use. I nearly lost one in some tall grass when it slid off my belt, but the call function made it stand out loud and clear. Couple it with a good security headset, and one of these units is more than dependable.

TriSquare eXRS TSX300-2VP 900MHz FHSS Digital Two-Way Radio (Charcoal Metallic/Black) (Pair) Review

I own both the TriSquare and Motorola Talkabout radiosThose of you who like to take your kids outdoors or skiing, may find this of interest.

Motorola T9500XLR 25-Mile 2-Way Radio
======================================

This is a typical walkie talkie. It 22 channels in the 462 MHz range and has 2 watts of power using GMRS/FRS protocols. The "25-mile" range is the theoretical max (i.e. on the lunar surface). The main problem with this technology is, well, other people.Imagine 1,000 people sharing 22 channels at Disney World.Motorola goes through great lengths to filter out other people. This is achieved by

(1) A special filter that blocks non-Motorola radios.A nice idea, but unfortunately 90% of walkie talkies are made by Motorola.

(2) A special privacy code which is assigned to each channel. Thus, all your Motorola radios have to be configured to the same privacy code in order to work with each other. Codes range from 1 to 121.

Nonetheless, even with filters and privacy encryption, if someone else is transmitting on your channel, there will be significant interference.

TriSquare TSX-300 eXRS 900MHz FHSS 2-Way Radio
================================================

These use a completely different technology. They transmit on 900 MHz in a 100% digital protocol. They sort of work like cell phones, without the service provider. Each radio is assigned a unique 10-digit number. No matter how crowded the ski resort, you'll always have a private channel for your family. These radios use 1 watt of power. The manufacturer does not provide distance performace, but claim that the radios have a range equal to or better than the Motorola Talkabouts.Comparison
==========

I took both brands with me and drove around town -a typical suburban setting with residential and commercial areas.I rated voice quality on a scale of 0 to 3 as follows:

0 no reception
1 unintelligible
2 intelligible but noisy or garbled
3 intelligible and clear

I then plotted the average rating as a function of distance. The digital eXRS technology was superior to the GMRS/FRS model. The eXRS average rating was 25% better than the Motorola Talkabout. The max distance I could get in my area (having lots of trees and buildings) was .45 miles with either radio. The Motorola box claims "2 miles in an urban setting", which is just not true in my case. The Motorol wins in overall voice quality. When the signal is strong, the voice quality of the Motorola was quite clear, whereas the eXRS unit always had a some background white noise.

Conclusion
===========The TriSquare eXRS radios lack a bit in overall voice quality. However, having great voice quality in a Motorola radio is worthless if you can't get through on a crowded channel. The benefits of the eXRS radios out way the one or two shortcomings, in my opinion. I tried the TriSquare units at a ski resort. They work just as advertised. No interference from other people whatsoever.

The TriSquare comes with two vox headsets, which work fairly well. The Motorola talkabout did not come with headsets, which cost $20 a piece at Radio Shack.

Niether the Motorola Talkabout nor the TriSquare eXRS seem particularly rugged or weather resistant, so I'd rate them the same in that regard.

The NOAA weather reception on the TriSquare was pretty bad.I have two other NOAA radios, which work just fine in my area. The Talkabout had very good NOAA reception.

Product Description:
TriSquare has revolutionized 2-way radio communication with eXtreme Radio ServiceTM (eXRSTM). eXtreme Radio Service (eXRS) two-way radios use proprietary Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) in the ISM band (900 MHz frequencies). This FHSS system combines the power of digital technology with narrow band FM modulation technique. Merging the two technologies facilitates a radio communications system that maintains a narrow band base signal to ensure for maximum usable range within a given dB power budget, comparable to traditional fixed frequency narrow band FM radios, but with the added benefit of wide band digital security and privacy provided by the frequency hopping spread spectrum algorithm. Maintaining the information signal as narrow band FM modulation centered on discrete frequencies allows for a large pool of non-overlapping hopping frequencies to draw upon within a given section of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. The pseudo-random drawing of the hopping frequencies spreads the total signal power equally over the entire bandwidth of the RF spectrum used, which ensures minimal interference between many simultaneous, independent users. Interference Free is a major advantage that eXRS has over existing FRS and GMRS radios. Based on a contracted study from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of a major university, more than 100,000 eXRS users within talk range can enjoy uninterrupted communications. Whereas, FRS/GMRS quickly becomes unusable with just a few tens of users within range of each other. Bottom-line is that the eXRS two-way radios provide private communications in areas where FRS/GMRS conversations can be congested or impossible. Depending on which model you choose, your eXRS radio will have 1,000, 10,000, or all 10 Billion eXRS channels available for your use. Each radio offers Voice-operated transmission (VOX) for hands-free operation with headset compatibility.

There are not that many negative points about this radio. We took it on vacation to Dominican Republic so I could be in contact with my kids in the resort.
The negatives first: Belt holders are totally useless. They are not easily banded so you can not attach the unit to your belt. I also would like that there were a lanyard holes so my kids could carry in on wrist on or the neck. We fount a solution by inserting lanyard under the belt holder. Another issue is that there is no battery indicator as well as charging indicator. So you do not know the charge level or remaining battery level.
In regards to the unit itself, it worked really well. We did stay about less then a mile apart of each other with a lot of low rise buildings and found no problem communicating with each other. This unit is significantly smaller then other more advanced units and it is a big plus if you want your kid to carry it.
I also wish that there would be more channels to select as we ran into the problem of other people being on the same channel as us.
But overall I really like this product and we will definitely use it on our next vacation.

I purchased 6 of these radios for my Squad.I am currently on my second deployment in Iraq and my squad has been split up to cover down on multiple jobs. Not everyone has an Army issued radio so I bought these in order to keep in contact with my soldiers during our daily tasks.I've tested these as far as 3 miles and they do a pretty good job.Clarity is always an issue when comparing them to Military issue radios, however, they work well for they are designed for.I've dropped mine more than a dozen times and it still works perfect.

Midland 1001Z 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Midland 1001Z 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, you're sitting there viewing this page in your browser, perhaps with a look of doubt in your face. That's why you've scrolled down here to the reviews. You're thinking to yourself "A $30 CB?It can't be worth a flip, right?".I tell ya what, I was thinking the same thing. But I gave it a shot and installed it in my wife's little '97 Corolla a few days ago, and so far I've been pretty impressed.

When I pulled it out of its box, my first thought was "Wow, cheap".And indeed it is.Its plastic case has almost no weight to it.The knobs and switches have the tactile feedback of a dirt-cheap appliance from Wal-Mart.Being the ham radio geek that I am, the first thing I did was pull out my trusty phillips screwdriver and open the case.More cheapness on the inside, all of the components no doubt obtained from the lowest bidder somewhere in Asia. However, I didn't see any sign of shoddy manufacturing that I've seen in other super-cheap products. No solder marbles shaking around inside, no apparent bad solder joints, components all in good shape, and everything seems to fit and function well.I put it back together.

Time to install.I spent an hour measuring and cutting a hole in the plastic tray beneath the stereo in our little Corolla to accommodate the length of the unit ; slid it in and secured it with 3M double sided tape.It looks pretty good, non obtrusive, black case matching the rest of the plastic in the car.It will no doubt fit will in other small cars too. After some snipping and soldering, I had power from the backside of the cigarette lighter.I temporarily attached my antenna (more on antennas later) and turned it on.

My main gripe is the channel knob. The flimsiness of the channel knob is really the only giveaway as to just how cheap of a radio this is.It "clacks" when you turn it, and feels like a child's toy when you do so.The channel doesn't change with every "clack", it could be 2 clacks or one clack before it actually changes. But, it works. And it doesn't feel like it's about to fall off or fly apart, so I'll let it slide.I go to channel 19 and key the mic to ask for a radio check.A trucker on I-20 about 5 miles away tells me it's working fine and sounds OK.I mention that it cost $30, and we share a laugh. That's when I notice my huge metal garage door is still closed.Nice, the radio works pretty well.I was worried that I wouldn't be able to hear the speaker since I mounted it flush with the plastic in the dash, speaker covered.I had even bought a $10 cheapo extension speaker from Amazon with the radio. But it's still pretty loud! And it doesn't sound too bad when I crank up the volume. Not bad!I declined to install my extension speaker...for now at least.

So I install my mag mount antenna on the truck, tuck the wires in, and put everything back together.Let me give you some radio nerd advice about antennas, because there seems to be lots of confusion about this in CB world.A -LEGAL- CB radio puts out 4 watts AM.That's it.All of them, expensive or inexpensive, doesn't matter...4 watts AM if it's legal. And if you want it to "get out", then you need to squeeze out each of those 4 watts as best as possible. The CB band is around 27 MHZ, or around 12 meters.Boring technicalities aside, it basically means you need a "large" antenna for best efficiency. The absolute best CB antenna ever made is the good ol' 102" whip. You can order them from Radio Shack for about $20.But 102" is huge, and unless you're driving a big truck, it will probably look bad.The second-best antenna you can get, in my opinion, is the Wilson 1000.It has a 62" whip, which is pretty long but doesn't look too bad on a car. They come in mag mount or permanent mount.I'm using a mag mount. Now once you've got the antenna installed, you're not finished. You need to tune it for a good SWR.Go buy a cheapo SWR meter and a small piece of coax from your local CB shop or truck stop, read some directions on the internet, and tune that thing as best as you can get it.The local CB shop might even do it for you if they're nice.It WILL make a difference, and you need all the help you can get when you're only running 4 watts.

So, now I have everything installed, antenna tuned, and it looks nice.I start up the car out and cruise around town.I chat with a few other locals in town, as well as truckers passing by on I-20.This little radio is working just as well as my "big" CB in my other car, which cost almost 3 times as much.It doesn't look fancy or have all the features that one does, but when it comes to just plain talking, this cheap guy gets the job done admirably.Someone in another review mentioned how well the squelch works and I can confirm that. This radio may be cheap, but function-wise it works great. The only "dumb" design decision I've noticed is that the speaker shuts off if you unplug the mic.But that doesn't effect you really, you need a mic to use a CB anyway.

Wow, this got pretty long, but hopefully it'll help someone out there. If you want a basic CB to do basic CB stuff and don't want to spend a lot of money; go ahead and buy this one.I'll give it 4 stars, deducting only for the flimsy feeling of the channel knob and switches. It's one of the best values I've ever come across in all my years of goofing around with radio.Just remember though, it's all about the antenna.Get a nice long one and tune it as best as you can, and this radio will serve you well.

Average Reviews:

This is a initial review of the Midland LXT114 [pair].
I just picked these up over the 4th of July sale Ace Hardware had.Originally selling of $14. each, they had on special with a $10. rebate by mail check each.So for a final investment I thought I could not go wrong for $4. each! They are a bit larger that the pair of Uniden [5 yrs. old] GMR 325-2's that I already own. They take the same batteries AAA x 3 as the older ones. The clip seems nice and sturdy, the battery covers are a bit tricky to get off but I'm hoping they loosen a bit with age.One nice thing is that the pre-programmed channels [22] all have freq's that match the Unidens, I was not expecting this & very happy. So now I have four radios that work togather for a total investment of about $25!!!We mostly use on family/friend outings.Hoping these are better on battery use than the Unidens, we will see.FYI the screen is NOT backlit like the photo shows. It is a light grey [unlit] with bold black numbers. Not especially helpful in low-light/night situations.I will post additional comments as we use further.

MIDLAND 75-822 40 Channel 2 Way Radio Review

MIDLAND 75-822 40 Channel 2 Way Radio
Average Reviews:

All the complaints I've read about this scanner are pretty pointless. This is the best Hand Held scanner I've ever owned. Go to Sears or Best Buy, see what HH CB's they have in, Probably just one, the Cobra 37 ST. Does that have channel scan, 5 memories, memory scan, freq. display, REAL mobile adpater not just a car power cord, NOPE. How much do they want? $40 in Best buy, and get this, $79.99 in sears, check their website.
The problems with range come with any handheld. I dont see the problem, take any hand held in a car and its range will go way down, But midland is only company that provides you with an external antenna hookup/power cord combined and make your radio the size of most mic's, you cant go wrong. The best you'll get from others is a DC power cable, but no way to connect an external car antenna to it. and they will still be full length.
You could also MOD this unit to pick up 120 channels CB (all you need to do is solder one connection...) if your more experienced, you can mod it to pick up 400 channels (dont believe me, try a search engine and type "Midland CB Mod"...
This scanner is the BEST on the market, and I cant belive the price. Would be nice if it has USB/LSB but hey, you cant get everything. It covers all the bases.

Product Description:
Having a CB radio while traveling can be an invaluable tool for emergencies and for keeping up on road conditions, and the Midland 75-820 40-channel handheld CB is one you should definitely consider. It comes with everything you need to get started in a hurry, including a battery pack for times you want to run the unit on six AA batteries and a cigarette lighter adapter for battery-free operation in your car.
The Midland 75-820's design is ideal, with a push-to-talk button on the side, squelch and volume knobs, and a small LCD screen that displays the current channel, signal strength, and a variety of other useful information. Several buttons on the device can be used for scanning, whether quickly flipping between the emergency channel (9) and the standard highway channel (19) or activating the LCD's backlight. The unit also comes with a short, flexible antenna.
Overall, the 75-820's portability is excellent--comparable to a child's walkie-talkie. Unfortunately, the unit's compactness hampers its usefulness, because the relatively small antenna has a hard time pulling in distant signals. In our tests on local highways and on the interstate, transmissions rarely could be heard from more than half a mile away. However, when we connected the Midland 75-822 to a whip antenna that was several feet long, the range increased considerably. As a result, we recommend investing in a better antenna before using the device in your car, although the radio still works well for communicating with nearby semis when you're trying to find out the source of a traffic jam.

We are so impressed with these radios that we bought a second set -- the clarity of the voices is so much better than the old Magnavox radios we had before. We got these primarily to go skiing with so the family can stay in touch. We haven't had a chance to use them for that, but we have tried them out.My husband drove down our road approx 2 miles from the house and we had no problem hearing each other. They are easy to use.We predict these will work great in the mountains skiing.

I ski (or board) all day with this earbud and a 280SLK on a NiMH battery.I have used TalkAbouts while skiing for a few years - but just got the 280 and the earbud, and it makes a WORLD of difference! The 280's lock featurelets me pack it down under layers. The earbud and wires stay well underlayers (hat, shirt, etc) as well.Only the mic sticks out from the side, which I can click to talk at any time.It has been over a foot under thesnow with my head when I blow a 360 - and still works perfectly.Thisearbud is a *must* for skiiers (or boarders!I do both.)

Bought these for a cross country convoy of a car club.Charged them once and they lasted the entire 1100 mile trip.No complaints.I specifically like that they came with rechargables and a charger that didn't require a base station (portable).

Motorola MR355R 35-Mile Range 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Review

Motorola MR355R 35-Mile Range 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I researched these radios on multiple sites and was surprised by the wide range of opinions. The biggest criticism seemed to be lack of range. The other hunters on the deer lease used various Motorola radios with satisfactory results and for ease of communicating with them I decided to purchase them through Amazon. We hunt in central Texas on an approximately 5000 acre ranch, with mixed terrain (woods, fields, flat and hills). These radios seemed to be more than adequate when communicating with the other hunters. The rechargeable batteries seemed to provide more than enough stand-by time and the ability to supplement them with standard batteries is a plus. The only reason that I didn't give them five stars is the short period of use. While I may find other issues over time and with more severe service, these radios had good range in the field.

Sporting the REALTREE AP HD CAMO pattern and featuring a range of up to 35 miles, the Motorola Talkabout MR355R is an ideal communication tool for the serious outdoor enthusiast. Lightweight and rugged, with extra large buttons to help you operate even with gloves on, the MR355R is built to handle any challenge without weighing you down. The MR355R includes an emergency alert feature, to inform others should any dangers come your way. The MR355R also features a built-in LED flashlight for peace of mind during evening adventures or unexpected emergencies and power outages. Weather alerts will provide your group with warnings of incoming storms or dangerous conditions. And, by tuning in to one of 7 NOAA channels, you'll always know what to pack. This radio also features the VibraCall silent vibrating ringer, which is useful for locations where ringing can be intrusive or background noise would drown out your ring tone.

A great communication tool for the serious outdoor enthusiast.

MR355R Features

35 Mile Range
The MR355R, under ideal conditions, gives you a range of up to 35 miles. Conditions vary with geography and other variables.
22 Channels With 8 Repeater Channels
Starting with the same 22 channels as the MR350, the MR355R adds 8 built-in repeater channels, which can work with a local repeater station to carry your signal further. Take advantage of this value-added feature by switching to GMRS channels 15R-22R, but don't forget you'll need a GMRS license and an accessible repeater station to take advantage.
Emergency Alert Button
When the alert button is activated, the radio transmits an alert siren followed by transmission of spoken or incidental sounds. This allows you to send the signal to other radios and warn of impending danger.
Keypad Lock
Lock your keypad to avoid accidentally changing your radio settings.
Channel Scan
Use scan to search the 22 channels for transmissions from unknown parties, to find someone in your group who has accidentally changed channels, or to quickly find unused channels for your own use.
Includes drop-in dual charger for easy charging.
Brilliant LCD with battery indicator, channel, and other info.
Oversized buttons are easy to use, even with gloves on.
Charging Options
You can charge the MR355R using the Motorola standard charging port (with the included charging adapter), the Drop-in cradle charger (also included), or purchase a mini-USB cable for use with the Mini-USB charging port, especially useful when traveling.
121 Privacy Codes
Interference Eliminator Codes help minimize interference by blocking transmissions from unknown sources. The MR355R features 121 codes for superior interference protection.
Ten Call Tones (Five Standard, Five Animal Sounds)
The MR355R can transmit different call tones to other radios in your group so you can alert them that you want to talk. You can also add stealth and fun to your outdoor adventure by masking your radio's normal ring tone under the guise of a quacking duck, a cackling goose, a gobbling turkey, a bugling elk or a howling coyote. You will find this a helpful way to blend into the untamed habitat of the wild.
Hands-Free Communication
Use the iVOX feature to transmit hands-free without the need for any headset accessories. Once iVOX is turned on, the radio detects your voice and transmits when you speak into the internal microphone.
QT (Quiet Talk) Noise Filtering
The QT noise-filtering feature helps to ensure uninterrupted communication with other Motorola radios, filtering out unwanted transmissions from other radios. This is useful in places where there is heavy radio traffic, such as amusement parks or ski resorts.
Talk Confirmation (Roger Beep) Alert
You can set your radio to transmit a unique tone when you finish transmitting. It is like saying "Roger" or "Over" to let others know you are finished talking.
Weather Receiver
Tune in to broadcasts by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio and Environment Canada Weatheradio. Both NOAA and Environment Canada have transmitters located throughout the United States and Canada, respectively. These transmitters broadcast watches, forecasts, and other information 24 hours a day.
Weather Alerts
A special alarm tone sounds an alert and turns on the weather receiver to give you immediate weather and emergency information.
Flashlight
Handy built-in LED flashlight comes in handy in the dark or during power outages.
Push-to-Talk (PTT) Power Boost
When activated, this feature helps extend the transmission range by increasing the transmitter power output while helping to save battery life when no power boost is necessary.
Extra Large Buttons
Skiers and winter sports adventurists will appreciate the new design that features extra large buttons making it easier than ever to operate with gloves.
VibraCall
For quiet adventures or when ringing is intrusive, the VibraCall feature can be enabled to silently alert users to incoming transmissions.
What's in the Box

Good deal for 20 bucks. I bought 4 of these to keep track of the kids in the neighborhood. Works great but don't expect to come anywhere near the 18 mile range. Channels 1-7 and 15-22 are suppose to get "UP" to 18 miles but you need a license from the FCC ($80) to use them. The free channels (8-14) get "UP" to 5 miles. I would say more like up to 1 mile in the city where I am. I still say it's a good deal just to track the little ones.

Uniden GMR2872-2CK 28-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Waterproof Two-Way Radio (Yellow) Review

Uniden GMR2872-2CK 28-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Waterproof Two-Way Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an amateur radio operator, I use very high quality walkie-talkies every day. This radio is well built and appears to be quite rugged.I use GMRS radios because my wife is not a ham.We need to be able to communicate around our property (several acres) and into town.I estimate the power output of this radio to be 2-3 watts. This is on a par with my other walkie-talkies.Power output on portable radios is always a trade off between range and battery life. This radio has a small battery - so more power would kill the battery in a hurry. The power output is adequate. The so-called range boost makes only a small difference in output. The claimed 28 mile range is a joke. These ratings should be divided by a factor of 20 in the real world. So what!My $600 5 watt portables won't do much better.Don't be disappointed - be realistic. That's why hams and public safety agencies use mountain top repeaters.Professional GMRS units start around $200.At $35-$40 each these units are excellent.
The weather radio sensitivity is excellent even with the short antenna. Was able to pick up a NOAA transmitter over 125 miles away.
Other trade offs:
No external mike or headset jack due to waterproofing concerns.Cannot use AAA batteries which makes extended field use a challenge. Could use cigarette lighter adapter in a car, however.Suggest purchase extra battery packs from Uniden and charge in radio prior to expeditions.

I use them camping to keep track of my grand kids.I wanted a set that was water resistant for obvious reasons. I also wanted max range because I realize that the range drops as soon as any obstacles are in the way.The range of these units in the forest is about 1 mile. Good Product.
