Easy to use while flying
Simple one-handed operation is the most essential feature of the IC-A6. The well labeled, large keypad provides user friendly operation. The large display shows both letters and numbers and is easy to see, making for fast frequency recognition. The display is backlit, and so is the keypad. "Flip-flop" channel recall

I know it says 5 watts, but after trying to hail a nearby village I realized that this VHF would not reach while another would.
I would recommend the Atlantis model that is about half the size of this one, not sure of the model number, but it looks similar to this one, just smaller.

(More customer reviews)The Cobra 75 WX ST Weatherband CB provides an incredible amount of functionality in a very small package.Installation is fast and easy - with a couple tools, your antenna mounted, and little skill, you can have this radio up and running in an hour or two.
CB radios are limited to low-power broadcasting at 4 watts or less.This radio provides maximum power allowed by law and is capable of some pretty incredible range under the right conditions.With a properly tuned, high-quality antenna, I have had coversations with others using the same radio up to 9 miles away.Under normal circumstances, 1-2 miles is more realistic.
As for features, this one has several:
- Scan (all 40 channels in sequence)
- Dual Scan (two channels of your choice)
- Memory
- Lock (so the hand controls don't get reset by accident)
- Weatherband (10 NOAA frequencies)
- Last 3 channels
- SoundTracker (like Dolby noise reduction)
I use mine in a 1999 Jeep Wrangler where there is little extra space for another device.It fits perfectly on my console with the small box hidden away inside.
I can listen to truckers while I am on the highway, talk to my friends when we go off-highway, or scan the channels for both when driving to and from the trails.In the two years I have used mine, it has never given me any problems.It is very sturdy and should stand up to hard use.
I purchased the optional external speaker so that it would be easier to hear but many people find the unit works well right out of the box!
There might be bigger, badder CB's out there, but this one is a peach!

(More customer reviews)Although, this radio was listed as refurbished you wouldn't know it except for the photocopied operations manual. After putting in the batteries, I found the radio to have a great receiver with excellent audio quality.

The transmit range is satisfactory and what is expected for a portable. In order add an external antenna you have to find an SMA connector with a small profile because the connector is slightly recessed.

The 3-channel scan feature is really handy. The weather radio is also quite good. Overall this is a nice marine portable for a bargain price.

(More customer reviews)As they say, "a little bit of knowledge goes a long way..."If you live in or near a big city, this scanner will do absolutely no good because large metropolitan police forces use a trunk communication system due to the large number of units at work at one time. These systems aren't actually scrambled, but due to high volume of calls, it would be hard of a single scanner unit to keep track of them so while you might be able to hear one end of the converstaion, you won't necessarily be able to hear the other.

This unit is perfect for smaller cities which use frequencies betweem 153.0000 and 169.0000 for their police communications. The unit is also good for tracking airport traffic and, as you know by now, NASCAR events. The best thing to do when scanning for new frequencies is to have access to a code book for your area so you'll know what you're listening to at the time.

If you're technologically-challenged in any way, you're better off letting someone who knows what they're doing program the basic channels for you. I like the fact that's it's a lot smaller and not as heavy as its predecesors. It's a conspicuous as a mobile phone and a lot easier to carry on your belt without it getting in the way.

Versatile, compact, and easy to use, the Uniden BC72XLT handheld scanner offers a simple way to monitor the "action" bands, including police and fire channels (including rescue and paramedics), NOAA weather transmissions, business and industrial radio broadcasts, utilities, marine and amateur (ham radio) bands, air bands, and more. In short, the scanner keeps interested parties in the information loop. Of course, scanning the 32,000 available frequencies can be time-consuming and frustrating, which is why Uniden added such functions as Close Call capture technology, which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters to help you detect and identify local signals, and a comprehensive memory that holds up to 100 programmed channels (10 per bank).
The scanner also offers six preset service banks, with preset frequencies for police, fire/emergency, aircraft, ham, marine, and weather, making it easy to locate specific types of calls. And should you want to regularly monitor a few specific channels, you can designate them as "priority" channels. The BC72XLT will then check those channels every two seconds while it scans each bank, so you never miss an important transmission. Other scanning functions include 10 programmable search ranges for finding unlisted frequencies in your area and a two-second scan delay that lets you hear any replies to the original transmission before moving on.
A scanner is fairly useless if you can't decipher the transmission, which is why the BC72XLT is outfitted with triple-conversion circuitry. The technology virtually eliminates any interference from IF images and clarifies the selected frequency, so you needn't strain to pick up certain words or phrases. And thanks to the key lock, you won't accidentally change the programming while carrying the scanner in your pocket. Add in a memory backup that preserves stored frequencies even if the scanner loses power and an easy-to-read, backlit display and you're ready for virtually any scanning situation.
The scanner comes with a flexible antenna with a BNC connector, ensuring adequate reception in strong signal areas (a separately sold external antenna will further improve reception), along with an AC adapter. As an alternative, you can power the scanner using two AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries (the latter can even be recharged while in the scanner). The unit measures 2.75 by 4.5 by 1.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

I concur with the positives in the other, previous reviews.

But I've got a couple of gripes, for which I knocked one star off the rating: (these are not deal-breakers, but just things to be aware of)

1.The included rechargeable batteries are just a bit too large in diameter for the battery cover to fit properly (the cover sort of "bulges" out).More of an annoyance at this point, but I'm concerned that it could possibly break eventually, requiring me to find a replacement cover.(Using AA batteries does not cause this problem, the cover fits just fine with them).

2.The arrangement and organization of the owner's manual is very poor in my view.It's not printed, which may surprise some buyers, personally I'd prefer it printed, but I understand the economics of releasing it only online/on included CD.But sorry, the manual is VERY POORLY arranged.I'm an experienced radio guy, just not with Uniden brand products.But I still am getting frustrated trying to find stuff.I would much prefer a PDF style manual, where typefaces, spacing, white space, etc. can be combined to communicate point much more effectively.Is this a big deal? Well probably not a deal-breaker, once you/I figure out how the various features work, we won't need the manual much, but it's a royal pain until then.You may have friends who can help you out on this, which may make this irritation not too big a deal for you.

3.This scanner does have a LOT OF CAPABILITY, including some really cool features, as a result, most keys have multiple functions, some (again, my personal opinion) are not as well thought out as I would prefer, ie not intuitive.

But overall, it's a good unit.My gripes are probably not deal-breakers, and keeping in mind the price, it's a worthwhile purchase. If you're experienced with Uniden products, you might not have any trouble at all figuring out how to use it, perhaps even not needing the manual, but if you're like me, just be prepared for a learning curve longer than you might otherwise expect.

It had a high rating and a must buy through a sailing web site.Being into sea kayaking it is very important that the radios we use are water proof. Having the floating feature along with the burp feature is a plus then along comes the blue tooth capability, I was sold. I couldn't wait to get my radio. First day out on the water I want to see how well it floated and check out the burp feature. Well it floated great to bad it quite working with in a minute of being dunked. I emailed and called cobra and no response I called cobra again and talked to a live person who transferred me to factory service where I left a massage. No response. I called again and found out the return procedures and sent the radio back at my expense. Now I am willing to say that not everything comes out the way it should and that I was unlucky and got a defective radio. Well two weeks later I get a new radio. What do you do when you have a problem with a product? You go test it and see if it will fail in those conditions again. Well radio number two failed at being water proof to the JIS7 rating. This radio lasted a few seconds longer then the first one. Played the phone tag game again with Cobra. This time I made them pay for shipping so I had to wait another week for the label to make it to me. Sent radio number two in and three weeks later I received radio number three. So far this radio has lived up to the JIS7 water proof rating. I like the features it has. But I am just wondering if and when it will quit on me, if it does I am requesting my money back from Cobra, three times and you are out! Cobra could have done a better job communicating and calling me back. I never got a letter of apology about two radios being bad and I had to do all the work on trying to get the radios returned only once did they call back and that was after I left a message saying that I was not impressed with their product or customer service.

(More customer reviews)This product is a piece of junk, so poorly constructed that the headband and operational parts have no solid connection. As soon as you put it on, it comes apart, a constant frustration. Perhaps the designers knew itcouldn't be worn long, so uncomfortable is it. It pinches the head, loses its adjustment, and the clamp at the end is hard and sharp edged, despite a piece of symbolic foam that's so hard it has no cushioning effect.

The earphone (there's only one) is of low quality, and I couldn't get the mic to work. It broadcast only static on otherwise functioning CB radios from both the same maker, Midland, and from Cobra.

It is the cheapest CB headset on the market, and for a reason. Don't waste your money on it.

I also am displeased with the merchant who sold it. Though it was well- packed and quickly delivered, when I wrote them for a return authorization, I got no reply. They apparently didn't want it back.

I can understand why.

(More customer reviews)We have two of these, we keep one in my wife's car and the other in mine.Our main use is to monitor traffic back-ups (delays) on the Interstate.For this purpose, it works great.

For more regular use, I would recommend getting the external (magnet-base) antennae.This significantly boosts both the reception and transmission.I carry one of these antennaes in my trunk for longer trips.There are not many choices out there for hand-held CBs -- Based on what's out there, this seems like a good choice.

(More customer reviews)I picked up this radio "rebranded" by a marine retailer.
I've found it works very well. I was also able to connect a handheld GPS to it with very little effort.
The power selection feature is nice for not blowing away anyone near you. The DSC feature is nice for getting the location of family members in others boats.
I really like the one touch "distress" feature, although I've never used it. When connected to a GPS, it will send your location to the Coast Guard. Good for me since my wife doesn't speak english.
I have nothing negative to report other than the mic cannot be removed. However, there is a remote mic available separately.

I would like to include instructions for connecting a serial connector to the included accesory cable (for the GPS) but amazon doesn't allow this. Maybe you can "search" for it.
