(More customer reviews)Been a driver for 20 yrs, always ran "el cheapo" radio stock out of box. decided to get big radio and looked for awhile b4 deciding on a 959, (same as 949 except has freq meter) it has features only found(and not found in some cases)on much more expensive models!! The ones that got me were variable talkback,4 stage LARGE meter that you can actually see and use ,(signal, modulation,power and swr),freq meter, ...so, I paid more than this site because i bought at a truck stop(pilot) paid 200. took to local radio shop and did basic peak and tune and added echo board (70$total)
and now get nothing but compliments all day!!! Big Galaxy sound!!! my driving buddies tell me i key up all over traffic on 19 and sound great doing it. my out of pocket is well below 300$ and you can save even more buying online. Also 2 year warranty is not voided by any mods you do as long as the mod doesnt cause the problem you send it in for!!!couldnt find that with any other radio!!! Another reviewer mentioned swr warning light may come on before 2.5 to 1 and this is true with mine also but i dont mind this ,i consider it an "early warning system" however if it bothers you galaxy is aware of prob and has solution on their support site. prob a 5$ fix at a radio shop
For example my buddy has a general lee, has about 350$ in it and it does sound great and all but he is jealous of all the features and good looks of mine and considering getting one!!

Uniden Atlantis VHF Waterproof Marine Radio Review

I have a fixed mount unit in my bigger boat and my test showed with line of sight transmission it goes about 5 miles very well and then starts to drop off because the antenna on this handheld radio will limit your distance. I set it up to connect to my long VHF antenna in the big boat and tested it out to 7 miles with a friends boat that had a fixed mount VHF radio. At that point it started to get a weak signal. This is a very good radio with good battery life, all during my testing at 5 watts (about 3 hours almost full time) the battery was still showing fully charged. This is a good product for the money. I plan on using it as a back up unit to hail nearby boats in case of emergency. You can spend a lot more on better radios, but this one fit my needs well.

Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording Review

(More customer reviews)I already have a couple software programs that will automatically record and save radio programming but when the Radio Shark was announced, I couldn't resist. Mac elegance, simplicity and functionality. Or so I thought. The product is solid, well made and the software is easy to use. Unfortunately, the reception is unacceptably poor in my suburban, residential area. Every radio I own from clock radios, a couple Tivoli Pal's, a built in-whole house system, mini-systems and so on receive programming easily. The Radio Shark's reception is inferior to even the lowliest of portables. I've tried everything I can think of. Coiling the USB cable, moving it to every place within reach, using a high dollar shielded usb extension cable which also allowed me to move the Shark further from the computer), using the Radio Shark's headphone input with a pair of ear buds and a minijack to rca cable (as Griffin's website suggests). Nothing seems to help. I have two other radios within 18 inches of computers and they were pretty easy to set up and receive clear, static free programming. The Radio Shark has been a huge disappointment. I should have learned my lesson after purchasing the Power Mate from this company. The Power mate (ditto for the Radio Shark) is very high quality piece of hardware from a fit and finish standpoint but the software was glitchy with a pc. Maybe it would have been better with a mac. But I digress. Perhaps if you live far from all urban and suburban interference or live on a hill with better line of site to the towers you want to receive from, the Radio Shark might be fine. For the rest of us, the Radio Shark is likely to disappoint. If you want to time shift radio programming, I can recommend two excellent pieces of software. High Criteria's Total Recorder Pro (for the pc) and Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro for the Mac. I don't work for or profit from either comany. I use both on a daily basis. Both are rock solid. All you need to do is connect a radio to your pc or mac and you're set.

(More customer reviews)If you love AM radio and are looking for a radio that has fantastic reception your choice comes down to two radios: the ccradio plus and the GE Superadio. These are the best radios on the market for fans of talk, sports, Art Bell, Phil Hendrie, etc. Which one should you buy? I have both (the GE for my office, ccradio for home) so here is my take on the two. Both have nearly equal AM reception. At night, you can easily pull in stations from hundreds of miles away (some say even over a thousand miles away but this depends on where you live). There the difference ends. The ccradio has a lot of features that I felt I wanted in a radio. It has a sleep timer, accurate digital tuning, automatic timer that turns your favorite show on at a predetermined time, scan buttons, lighted dial, power cord (not bulky adaptor), weather radio (with auto alert), memory buttons, tv audio of the network stations. The only flaw is that it has a grab indentation rather than a full handle. They are a family business and take GOOD care of their customers. The ccradio company LOVES radio and loves people who share their passion. Is it worth the [$$] for the extras? To me it is. The Ge Superadio has a rotary - and inaccurate - tuning dial. This will drive you crazy if you do a lot of channel switching. Some people tape graph paper to the radio and mark where they found the stations - it is that inaccurate. There is no timer, no alarm, no weather, no tv audio, no lit dial, etc. The sound is better on the GE Superadio, though. The GE SUperadio feels cheaply made and probably won't make it through many beach or camping excursions. The GE Superadio is enormously sized - it is the size of a small attache case or TV! If you only want to pull in one distant station and keep your dial set to that station, get the GE radio. That is all you need. It has great, almost legendary, reception without any bells or whistles. On the other hand, if you love radio, need the extras, change stations a lot, want something sturdily built that will last a lifetime, want to explore the large number of AM stations that are out there, go out and order the ccradio with slightly better reception (see their website to order). I am a radio person rather than a tv person. I have radio playing all day (as some people have tv going on all day). I sleep to radio (and need that sleep timer). I would rather listen to a talk show than watch a sit com. I would rather listen to Coast to coast, Phil Hendrie, and Rush than watch another rerun of Frasier or Friends. If you are like me, do yourself a favor and invest in the ccradio. You won't regret it. P.S., the FM reception will be better than you are used to, also.
Bottom line: The GE superadio is low cost with no extras and big and bulky. The CCradio plus is expensive, has every extra you could want (except a decent handle), more sensitive but does nto sound as good as the GE for music.

I was looking for a small to medium size boombox for my pre-teen daughter which can play MP3 CD's and included a digital radio receiver, tape player, and had a nice full sound.
After much searching area stores and online I came across the Naxa Portable MP3/CD player.
The Naxa is fairly small and the sound quality is decent but does not compare in volume or base to the large and ugly Sony Xplod boxes.
What the Naxa does well is to play MP3 files from its USB/SD port or CD player.The radio is manually tuned (you have to be kidding) but actually gets good reception of a somewhat week FM station my kids like to listen to.The USB/SD feature is especially useful and is now a requirement for me.
There is no cassette tape player which is understandable these days as finding some thing to play tapes on is becoming increasingly rare.

For the price the Naxa has been a good value and is being used by the kids to play their favorite radio station, CD's, and MP3's at low to moderate volumne levels.I'm glad I found it.

If deciding to pick up one of these watch the price, I was able to get this one for half of what some sellers were asking.

I would love to find a quality built and high quality sounding boombox with a digital radio, CD/MP3 player, USB/MP3, and cassette player/recorder (wishful thinking).This would likely cost more than the little Naxa but I'd be willing to pay for it.
I definately recommend the Naxa for its price/value.
It's a nice little portable player for the money.

RCA RP7887 AM/FM Super Portable Radio Review

(More customer reviews)If you're looking for a 45-dollar radio with no frills, the best AM available, very strong FM, big sound and you don't care about looks or big size, accurate tuning dial, no clock or MP3 output, you've found your radio in the RCA High-Performance Super Radio. I keep mine in the garage and it booms big enough to hear when I'm washing the car. The AM is great. About the biggest headache is getting used to the tuning dial, which is less accurate than any radio I've owned. But it's still easy to use. To get a high-performance radio with digital tuning, presets, similar big sound, and accurate read-out, you'd have to dish out 125 dollars or so for the Kaito 2100. So depending on your budget and needs, the RCA may be the best radio available.

If you're looking for a replacement for the now discontinued Super Radio, you might want to check out the even better Sangean PR-D5, featuring a 200mm internal ferrite antenna, the biggest one available.

Cobra 148 GTL 40-Channel CB Radio Review

(More customer reviews)First unit shipped to me received fine but the transmit audio was terrible. Even with the Dynamike turned up all the way people could barely hear me. Had to literally shout to be heard at all.
To Amazon's credit they sent me a replacement unit 2nd day air. Amazon has been great to deal with, as always.
This second radio seems to transmit fine so far. However, the speaker of this radio emits a constant, low volume, high pitched whine when receiving. The first radio did not have this "feature".
The good news is all of the controls and features seem to work correctly and the noise blanker and automatic noise limiter do a terrific job stopping car ignition noises. I figure I will keep this radio and live with the whine and hope no other problems crop up. If they do I will change my rating.

Cobra GMRS Two-Way Radio (PR9502DX) Review

(More customer reviews)I have another set of Cobra FRS radios which I think are great. This new addition to the Cobra GMRS/FRS group is really outstanding. It has smart looks, easy to operate controls, good fidelity and the ability to change from 500mw to 2 watts, depending on the channel selected and whether you wish to save battery juice.
There are some other "bells and whistles" like 10 different ringing sounds, including a "Vibra Alert", power indicators, signal strength (incoming & outgoing), belt clip, carry strap....jeez, what else could you ask for and only [price] a pair?
The range is typical for these products, which really depends on the terrain (4+ miles in the open, about 3 ish on highways [car to car] and about 2 miles or a bit less in crowded streets). Remember, the higher one is the better when using UHF "line of sight transmissions. I was parked in an underground lot the other day (under cement and steel, etc) and had to coordinate picking up my wife....even though we were, at one point, separated by 2 floors, about 1/3 of a mile and lots of cubic feet, these Cobras still did the needful and kept us in contact while I negotiated my way out of the... parking garage. This deal has to be a "no brainer."

While driving in a semi, it works well to cancel out the noise of the truck from the background.

In addition, the advantages over mobile Bluetooth devices is that you do not need to recharge this unit.If you spend a lot of time in a vehicle, this is a good product for you.

We live in a residential area (no skyscrapers or large powerlines) and I was very disappointed when the signal went from clear to static after about 4 blocks. I called Motorola technical support and they indicated that was a common complaint.

If range is a concern,don't waste your money on this product.

Each radio is equipped with 22 channels (15 GMRS and 7 FRS) for communicating with friends or family. It's easy to browse for channels thanks to the channel scan feature, which looks for active signals while you view the display, and the monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given frequency. And talking on the radio couldn't be simpler--just hit the PTT button when you're ready to transmit. It's important to note that the transmission range will vary depending on the channel and the surrounding terrain.
The radios also include such features as a battery strength meter, a keypad lock that keeps you from accidentally pressing buttons at the wrong time (such as when a radio is in your pocket), and a roger beep that indicates the end of a transmission. And no worries about running out of power too quickly, as the radios run for around 25 hours each on three AAA batteries--a duration aided by the power save mode. The entire bundle, which also includes a pair of belt clips for efficient transport, is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

(More customer reviews)There are a lot of CB radios out there and the Cobra 29 LTD Classic has stood the test of time.It comes with the traditional chrome detailed brushed aluminum faceplate that really shows off this radio.But the true quality is in the radio itself.I have owned plenty of CBs in the past 30 years including some top-end AM/sideband CBs as well as a few export radios, and as far as a straight AM 40 channel CBs, this is one that really shines above the others.The most impressive features in this radio are its sensitivity in receiving, even while the Noise-Blanker and/or Automatic Noise Limmiter circuits are engaged.And these circuits actually eliminate static and engine-generated noise...unlike some other radios.Overall, the 29LTD Classic is perhaps the best inexpensive AM CB out there!

Cobra has brought backtheir version of the CB with this 29-LTD. They've made some nice improvements to the CB youmight have used a decade or two ago. In a time of seemingly un-ending technological advances, it's nice to see something wecreated back in the late 1930s is still alive and kicking.
