(More customer reviews)My battery died prematurely, probably due to the fact that the radio never leaves its base.In a house setting it's vitally important for a two-way radio to operate while in its charging base.The problem is that the battery rarely gets a chance to exercise and will probably die due to non-use.

This generic battery module is fully compatible with the radio and costs less than 50% of the original manufacturer's unit.

I tried to use regular AA-size NiMH battery in the radio--they work to operate the radio but they will not recharge inside the radio for reasons I cannot identify.This was a big problem.It was important to get a custom-made battery for that radio that matches the radio's charging circuit.Even my regular source of custom-made battery modules did not have a properly fitting battery module for my radios.

I'm not sure what the problem was with regular NiMH AA-sized batteries, but this battery solves it at the same price as four NiMH AA batteries and way cheaper than the batteries the original manufacturer offers, and even cheaper than the custom-made battery vendor.

**EDIT** This battery is going strong in late 2010.I believe the original radio was discounted due to battery failures.I still saved quite a bit even with this new battery.

For the kids, and light usage, they can't be beat considering the price. I did take them to the mall, and frequently had people on the same channels, as well as reception issues (it's a big concrete structure after all).
But for walking around the neighborhood, going to a park, or maybe usage in a department store, they serve their purpose well.
If you're looking for more heavy duty, longer range, high-security 2-way's, these aren't for you.
If you want simple, easy to use, light usage radios, this is your best bet.

(More customer reviews)I have a Motorola 6400 radio.When I received this headset I followed the instructions as to how to plug it in, including turning off the radio first.This headset overrides the VOX and keeps it on continuously.I am not able to turn off the VOX when the headset is in even though I turn off the VOX prior to plugging in the headset.When it's plugged in, the VOX control does not display at all, leaving it inaccessible.It also "hot-mike's" and causes high pitched noise.I required a headset for my work in the Army in Iraq and this one does not meet advertised expectations. I cannot use it at all.

(More customer reviews)My original batteries lasted about a year of fairly constant use (charge/discharge). These new ones don't seem to hold a charge as long as the batteries that came with the radios. It took several charge/recharge cycles to get them to hold a charge for an appreciable time. If the original batteries that came with the radios worked so well, why don't these replacements equal their performance?

I might go to Batteries Plus to see what, if anything, they might have as an upgrade replacement. TriSquare STILL makes the best personal radio on the market though. It far surpasses the standard FRS radios that permiate the market. The range is better, the audio is better, the channel selection is, well, there is NO comparison.

TriSquare: 10,000,000,000 (Yes, that's Ten Billion with a B) + the privacy of SSFH technology.
And it's only maybe $40 more than an average FRS! You can't beat this radio. Get the 300 series (mentioned above)for you and the wife and the 100 series for the kids. If the kids lose them they don't cost as much for the 100 series (1,000 channels vrs. 10 Billion for the 300 series).

(More customer reviews)No fancy features here (nothing like weather band or quiet codes). They do have a "call" key, that sends a ring sound on the selected channel.
Just a pair of small, easy to use, easy to carry walkie-talkies, with great sound. They even work fine with rechargable batteries (have tried Ni-MH).
Only problem: the manual does not specify which are the FRS and which are the GMRS channels. (You need a license to transmit on GMRS.) After using these units and some Motorolas (FRS only) together, I could find that FRS are the first 14, GMRS the last 8.

(More customer reviews)I have another set of Cobra FRS radios which I think are great. This new addition to the Cobra GMRS/FRS group is really outstanding. It has smart looks, easy to operate controls, good fidelity and the ability to change from 500mw to 2 watts, depending on the channel selected and whether you wish to save battery juice.
There are some other "bells and whistles" like 10 different ringing sounds, including a "Vibra Alert", power indicators, signal strength (incoming & outgoing), belt clip, carry strap....jeez, what else could you ask for and only [price] a pair?
The range is typical for these products, which really depends on the terrain (4+ miles in the open, about 3 ish on highways [car to car] and about 2 miles or a bit less in crowded streets). Remember, the higher one is the better when using UHF "line of sight transmissions. I was parked in an underground lot the other day (under cement and steel, etc) and had to coordinate picking up my wife....even though we were, at one point, separated by 2 floors, about 1/3 of a mile and lots of cubic feet, these Cobras still did the needful and kept us in contact while I negotiated my way out of the... parking garage. This deal has to be a "no brainer."

(More customer reviews)The product Quality seems to be B+.The total package still fails.Why!!!Because the base unit two way radios "voice activation feature" does not work with the headset package that it comes with and they knew it before they packaged it and sent it out.

I bought my daughter and son-inlaw to be a set of two way radios with voice activation so that they could enjoy their bike rides together safely and with constant communication with the voice activated feature advertised with these two way radios.The day of the trip, they could not figure out how to get it to work.

A week later, when they had time, my daughter called customer support only to find out that they knew that it did not work.They did not offer any suggestions or willingness to send a head set that does work.

I really think they should have sent her a head set that does work.Seventy dollars is a lot of money to pay for a device that does not work on one of the most basic and attractive features of the radios.

(More customer reviews)I used these radios for two purposes: to stay in touch with my firends on the mountain when skiing, and to talk to people in the other car on the road. In both cases, they worked perfectly. In the past, I had experience with similar radios without privacy codes, and it was a nightmare at a big ski resort because all channels were busy most of the time, and you had to listen to all that chatting to make sure that you do not miss a call from someone from your party. As you can imagine, skiers and boarders use such radios quite often. The privacy codes which this radio is equipped with eliminate interferences with other people completely and reliably - better than I could expect. You still share the same 14 channels with the other people using the principle "only one radio can transmit at a time", but you do not hear the other people talking unless they use the same privacy code as you do. The only way how you know that the channel is in use is blinking on the display. Setting the privacy code to zero enables you to communicate with people with the older radios without the privacy codes.
The radios are compact, and have long battery life. Typically, a set of 3 AA batteries lasts 3-4 days. The reception is clear and loud. The settings of the channel and subchannel can be locked, which is great because this prevents inadvertent switching to another channel when one or another button gets accidentally pressed in your pocket. If this happens, the most difficult part is to recall what setting you used before! The radio also has a "scan" function which I never used and find useless because it is good only to get out of the radio noise and conversations of the strangers. The range of the radio is decent (Motorola claims up to 2 miles in an open area), although it may not to work if you get separated from your party by a mountain ridge. A longer range can only be reached if you use more powerful radios which work in GMRS frequency band and require a government license (which costs, I think, about seventy bucks per year). The last but not least, these radios are weather-resistant and will not get damaged by sweat and moisture accumulated inside of your jacket.
It is my understanding that different brands and models of FRS radios use the same standard, they are compatible, and they all have the same basic features. They difference is only in (a) weight, (b) size, (c) sound quality, (d) weather resistance, and (d) availability of privacy codes. This Motorola is not the cheapest radio on the market, but you get a good value for the dollars paid as it is a well-built compact weather-resistant radio with a good sound quality.

We've had them just over months and they still work great!I took off one star because the batteries take so long to charge.

(More customer reviews)I assumed this had the features listed for other Gxt series but it doesn't.The radio has 1 senitivity level for vox (as oppossed to 3), has no 100+privacy channel availability (like other gxt models), no NOAA weather channel, and no rechargable battery pack (which I didnt' expect it to). The range was about the same or slightly less that the uniden 2059ck (20 mile) set I also got (7-8 blocks where one is in the house and the other is in a car).The uniden had much better features (see my review).The brochure they send with the unit states " all gxt series radios" and then list the features including 3 levels of VOX, 121 privacy codes, monitor and channel scan (there is monitor feature but no scan), vibrate alert, noaa weather channel.I got the surveillance headsets and on vox they work well (although you have to turn your head to your lapel to talk into the mic and be heard).Antonline is great, I got the product in 1 week from order, shipped next day UPS.

The range is only as good as line of sight, that is to say if you were on top of a tall building and could see the person to whom you were transmitting to, you might get the advertised range of up to five miles "as the crows flys". R.F. power out is rated at 2 watts! On the other hand, most people use these units for short distance communications, and can be satisfied with maybe a mile with objects in the way of the r.f. that is being emitted. All IN ALL THEY WERE WORTH 25.00 FOR THE PAIR, GIVEN THE OLD ADDAGE,"YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR".

(More customer reviews)I bought a pair of these T6400's because of the hope that one watt of power would yield range at least approaching the range advertised for the 1/2 watt family radios (2 miles).What I found is that the whole radio range concept has been turned into one of the biggest marketing scams around.I can't believe it is legal for them to print "up to 5 mile range" on the box, even with all the fine print.I live in a flat section of Austin, Texas, which is not especially dense but does have some foliage and a reasonable number of houses.I tested the radios using a GPS so that I would know the exact distance to the other radio.I could not believe the result.The radios had very clear voice quality to .25 miles.Voices were 80% intelligible at .35 miles.After that, the radios were useless.There are some nice features on these radios, but give me a break.I'm returning them.

(More customer reviews)I don't understand why these have so many negative reviews here. My pair function beyond my expectations for a [$] pair of 2-way radios. I would agree that the volume doesn't go down far enough, but that's the biggest complaint I have. as for battery life, no electronic gadget functions well in cold weather with alkaline batts. cold weather is what lithiums are for.
