For the kids, and light usage, they can't be beat considering the price. I did take them to the mall, and frequently had people on the same channels, as well as reception issues (it's a big concrete structure after all).
But for walking around the neighborhood, going to a park, or maybe usage in a department store, they serve their purpose well.
If you're looking for more heavy duty, longer range, high-security 2-way's, these aren't for you.
If you want simple, easy to use, light usage radios, this is your best bet.

(More customer reviews)No fancy features here (nothing like weather band or quiet codes). They do have a "call" key, that sends a ring sound on the selected channel.
Just a pair of small, easy to use, easy to carry walkie-talkies, with great sound. They even work fine with rechargable batteries (have tried Ni-MH).
Only problem: the manual does not specify which are the FRS and which are the GMRS channels. (You need a license to transmit on GMRS.) After using these units and some Motorolas (FRS only) together, I could find that FRS are the first 14, GMRS the last 8.

(More customer reviews)We use this 2-way in a medium size retail store (50,000 sq. feet) and it works great.The batteries last a full 12 hour day.There is ocassional static, but normally switching channels solves that problem.They've been dropped several times (on tile and carpet), but they keep on going. We've had them just over months and they still work great!I took off one star because the batteries take so long to charge.

I would agree that the volume doesn't go down far enough, but that's the biggest complaint I have. as for battery life, no electronic gadget functions well in cold weather with alkaline batts. cold weather is what lithiums are for.

It has features that the more expensive Motorola TalkAbout FR60 does not have, such as a lock (so if you have it in your pocket and a button is pressed mistakenly, nothing will happen!),LCD backlit display,a bendable antenna, and belt clips (you would have to pay EVEN MORE for this on the FR60)! It has excellent clarity, easy to use buttons, a Call button, 14 channels, 38 subcodes (so other people cannot annoy your conversation!), and much more! The only thing I would like on this Cobra is that it would have better clarity with people in a longer distance (about a mile and a half, you cannot hear at all, depending on the surroundins). I definitely reccomend this Cobra radio! If you are about to buy the Motorola FR60, drop your credit card and turn to the Cobra FRS 220 2-way radio!

What is Family Radio Service (FRS)? In 1996, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) set aside one part of the FM radio frequency spectrum for use by small groups at short ranges. Use of this UHF range--from 462.5625 to 467.7125 MHz--is free and doesn't require an FCC license. (GMRS, or General Mobile Radio Service, does require an FCC license.)
When using an FRS radio, expect reception to be affected by the terrain--thick woods, buildings, and electrical sources will cut your range. However if you're transmitting to another radio from a mountaintop or other high point, you could reach someone up to two miles away.
Cobra's microTALK radios come with features that make using FRS simple and enjoyable. The Cobra FRS 220 microTALK features an automatic squelch that prevents the radio from activating until a voice signal is received. With squelch, you won't hear random popping and hissing from other electronic devices or atmospheric signals. The keypad lock prevents accidental pressing of buttons, and the call key allows you to signal anyone in your party with a distinctive tone.
This radio comes with all 14 available FRS channels plus 38 CTCSS subchannels, or "privacy codes," per channel. CTCSS codes are actually tones that "code" and "decode" a signal, allowing the people in your group to transmit on the same channel without having to listen to other radio traffic on the same channel. Note that these privacy codes won't keep others from listening to you--FRS users without a CTCSS code-enabled radio will still hear your transmissions. (More customer reviews)My first experience with this radio was a used one I bought in an auction.There were no instructions and I had to figure out all the features.It wasn't that difficult, but contrary to the description by Amazon, this radio does NOT have the scramble feature.I liked this radio so much I bought a new one.Armed with the instructions, I found features I didn't know existed.The GE 35840 is one of a handful radios that have programmable memory.You can set up to 10 different channel/CTCSS tone combinations.Another feature not found in many FRS radios is the memory scan.Now this may not seem important but it does provide a bit of security to your conversations.I programmed both my GE 35840 radios to scan 4 different channel and CTCSS tone combinations.When I transmit on one, a random selection from the 4 memories I have programed is selected.While scanning the other radio picks-up the transmission in about 1/2 second.What this does is make it difficult for anyone trying to listen in on your conversation to keep track of you.You are talking on 4 different channel/CTCSS combinations at random.They may hear bits and pieces of your conversation, but that's all.Also, when scanning all channels the GE 35840 will sync to the CTCSS tone when it senses a signal.This happens in about 1/2 second.Another nice feature is the temperature display.Along with the temperature, this radio will also receive NOAA weather transmissions.Battery usage is very good and this radio takes 3 AA batteries for a long battery life.The speaker/mic external connections works great with ICOM/Radio Shack speaker mics.You will not have to buy a high-prices model that only the manufactorer sells.Range and sound quality is very good.I have about 7 different brands of FRS radios and this one is my favorite.If you can pickup a couple, do so!

Midland AVP2 Dual Desktop Charger for Midland G Series Radios Review

(More customer reviews)We bought 2 pairs of radios and 2 charger kits.Nothing in the instructions warns against deep-cycling the batteries.I fully charged all 4 batteries the first time, then left the radios on until the batteries were fully discharged.Three out of four of the batteries would not recharge.I hope they'll replace the batteries, but still, we'll have to remember not to leave a radio on in a coat pocket or something.
UPDATE:I talked to Midland Tech Service.They sent replacement batteries but also suggested that I remove the old batteries for 15 minutes to allow the radios to re-set.The "bad" batteries then accepted a charge.A cute trick, but I had to call Midland to get it.

(More customer reviews)I have owned several pairs of walkie talkies ranging from cheap "toy" types to more expensive brand name 2 way radios.This set of Midland LXT110 walkie talkies are very inexpensive yet perform quite well.They are of a sturdy enough plastic construction.The buttons do not feel overly tough, but for the price they are more than adequate.

All the features are quite typical for this sort of product. They are 22 channel radios running GMRS.You can scan channels to find an open or clearer channel.The units have VOX (Voice Operated Transmission) The auto-squelch feature helps reduce background noise.You can lock the keypad, dis/enable keypad tones, and there is a jack for a headset.

Each unit runs on three AAA batteries.You can of course use rechargeable AAA cellsas well, and you can charge rechargeable batteries via the jack while they are installed in the walkie talkie.

The radios are advertised as having a range of `up to 12 miles'.While I am sure geography is a factor, I don't know that it is practical to assume you will get 12 miles of range.I tested these in a typical suburban neighborhood and was able to hear and be heard for approximately ? mile.I also tried these in a shopping mall and found we could communicate well within ? mile of each other.I would think those are typical usage situations.

I did test them in a wooded area that was relatively flat and got close to a mile apart while staying in contact.I was only going about a mile away, so I don't know how much further the range would have extended before I lost contact.

For the price, I feel the performance is excellent.I have purchased "toy" walkie talkies for a similar price which performed as......toys.I think these radios are comparable to products that sell for about double the price or a little more.

If you want a pair of inexpensive 2 way radios, this is an excellent product.

(More customer reviews)Good deal for 20 bucks. I bought 4 of these to keep track of the kids in the neighborhood. Works great but don't expect to come anywhere near the 18 mile range. Channels 1-7 and 15-22 are suppose to get "UP" to 18 miles but you need a license from the FCC ($80) to use them. The free channels (8-14) get "UP" to 5 miles. I would say more like up to 1 mile in the city where I am. I still say it's a good deal just to track the little ones.

(More customer reviews)Purchased these walkie talkies for a cross country trip.We used them to communicate between two cars on a trip lasting 4 days from Oregon to Arkansas.The batteries lasted a reasonable length of time and the sound quality was great.Did encountered other people on the channel we were using, but it was no problem to switch to another channel.Cannot comment on the maximum range since we were never more than a mile apart.This turned out to be a great buy and do recommend this product, particularly for the way we used them.

The range on these is awesome and the whole time I had to communicate with the other walkie talkie from this set I could hear him perfectly. Other two-ways were on our channel in the group with varying ranges, and my set was by far the best.. For the price you can't beat it.
