Motorola T4500 AA 2-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) Review

Motorola T4500 AA 2-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Picked these up with some X-mas money, mainly for play use with my 4yr old son, with some minor utility while out with the family.
For the kids, and light usage, they can't be beat considering the price. I did take them to the mall, and frequently had people on the same channels, as well as reception issues (it's a big concrete structure after all).
But for walking around the neighborhood, going to a park, or maybe usage in a department store, they serve their purpose well.
If you're looking for more heavy duty, longer range, high-security 2-way's, these aren't for you.
If you want simple, easy to use, light usage radios, this is your best bet.

I have a Motorola 6400 radio. When I received this headset I followed the instructions as to how to plug it in, including turning off the radio first. This headset overrides the VOX and keeps it on continuously.I am not able to turn off the VOX when the headset is in even though I turn off the VOX prior to plugging in the headset. When it's plugged in, the VOX control does not display at all, leaving it inaccessible. It also "hot-mike's" and causes high pitched noise.I required a headset for my work in the Army in Iraq and this one does not meet advertised expectations. I cannot use it at all.

Trisquare TSX-BP NiMH Rechargeable Battery Pack Review

Trisquare TSX-BP NiMH Rechargeable Battery Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My original batteries lasted about a year of fairly constant use (charge/discharge). These new ones don't seem to hold a charge as long as the batteries that came with the radios. It took several charge/recharge cycles to get them to hold a charge for an appreciable time. If the original batteries that came with the radios worked so well, why don't these replacements equal their performance?

I might go to Batteries Plus to see what, if anything, they might have as an upgrade replacement. TriSquare STILL makes the best personal radio on the market though. It far surpasses the standard FRS radios that permiate the market. The range is better, the audio is better, the channel selection is, well, there is NO comparison.
FRS: 14
TriSquare: 10,000,000,000 (Yes, that's Ten Billion with a B) + the privacy of SSFH technology.
And it's only maybe $40 more than an average FRS! You can't beat this radio. Get the 300 series (mentioned above)for you and the wife and the 100 series for the kids. If the kids lose them they don't cost as much for the 100 series (1,000 channels vrs. 10 Billion for the 300 series).

I installed this CB in a newer Jeep Wrangler (JK). The hand-held size is great & the "brains" of the unit tucks away nicely & comes with groments to stub out the hook up to provide a real slick install. I added an external speaker from Radio Shack (around $20) & they work well together. I'd highly reccommend this unit

Motorola TalkAbout T5420 AA 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) Review

Motorola TalkAbout T5420 AA 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radios
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used these radios for two purposes: to stay in touch with my firends on the mountain when skiing, and to talk to people in the other car on the road. In both cases, they worked perfectly. In the past, I had experience with similar radios without privacy codes, and it was a nightmare at a big ski resort because all channels were busy most of the time, and you had to listen to all that chatting to make sure that you do not miss a call from someone from your party. As you can imagine, skiers and boarders use such radios quite often. The privacy codes which this radio is equipped with eliminate interferences with other people completely and reliably - better than I could expect. You still share the same 14 channels with the other people using the principle "only one radio can transmit at a time", but you do not hear the other people talking unless they use the same privacy code as you do. The only way how you know that the channel is in use is blinking on the display. Setting the privacy code to zero enables you to communicate with people with the older radios without the privacy codes.
The radios are compact, and have long battery life. Typically, a set of 3 AA batteries lasts 3-4 days. The reception is clear and loud. The settings of the channel and subchannel can be locked, which is great because this prevents inadvertent switching to another channel when one or another button gets accidentally pressed in your pocket. If this happens, the most difficult part is to recall what setting you used before! The radio also has a "scan" function which I never used and find useless because it is good only to get out of the radio noise and conversations of the strangers. The range of the radio is decent (Motorola claims up to 2 miles in an open area), although it may not to work if you get separated from your party by a mountain ridge. A longer range can only be reached if you use more powerful radios which work in GMRS frequency band and require a government license (which costs, I think, about seventy bucks per year). The last but not least, these radios are weather-resistant and will not get damaged by sweat and moisture accumulated inside of your jacket.
It is my understanding that different brands and models of FRS radios use the same standard, they are compatible, and they all have the same basic features. They difference is only in (a) weight, (b) size, (c) sound quality, (d) weather resistance, and (d) availability of privacy codes. This Motorola is not the cheapest radio on the market, but you get a good value for the dollars paid as it is a well-built compact weather-resistant radio with a good sound quality.

Average Reviews:

I bought a pair of these T6400's because of the hope that one watt of power would yield range at least approaching the range advertised for the 1/2 watt family radios (2 miles). What I found is that the whole radio range concept has been turned into one of the biggest marketing scams around.I can't believe it is legal for them to print "up to 5 mile range" on the box, even with all the fine print.I live in a flat section of Austin, Texas, which is not especially dense but does have some foliage and a reasonable number of houses.I tested the radios using a GPS so that I would know the exact distance to the other radio.I could not believe the result. The radios had very clear voice quality to .25 miles.Voices were 80% intelligible at .35 miles. After that, the radios were useless. There are some nice features on these radios, but give me a break.I'm returning them.

We got these for Christmas, and are very pleased with them. We haven't tested out the range yet, but were counting on a slightly wider range than the 6-mile ones (which reviewers found to have a 1-mile range).

I thought it was a little strange that we were required to apply for an FCC license. I just went online to do this, and was surprised to find that it costs $80. In addition, the online registration process is confusing and time-consuming. Regardless of whether having a license affects the performance of the unit, Amazon should have made a much larger note of it. For Pete's sake, the license costs more than the radios do.

Product Description:
Stay connected with your buddies while on the trail, at the river, or anywhere else within a 10-mile range with this pair of GMR1088-2CK two-way radios. Also ideal as neighborhood watch tools and kid-sitting aids, each water-resistant radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and 99 CTCSS/DSC privacy codes, along with a voice-operated transmitter that enables hands-free communication when used with an optional HS 2467 headset and microphone. The large number of channels and privacy codes give users several communication options, ensuring that they can almost always talk with friends or family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. The channels are easy to find thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses for active channels while you watch, and the channel monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given channel. To transmit on a GMRS or FRS channel, a user merely presses the PTT or power-boost button while the scan is paused. The power-boost button expands the radio's range by emitting maximum power when a GMRS channel is detected. The radios are also equipped with a NOAA National Weather Service receiver. In weather-alert mode, the system functions as it does in GRMS mode, but also monitors the selected weather channel for storm updates and other information. When using the weather function, users can't receive GMRS communications, however.
Additional features include a backlit LCD display, keypad lock, and a choice of five different call tones. The selectable tones are ideal for groups with several radios, as it lets users differentiate between calls. The radios also include a pair of belt clips for efficient transport, along with two charging cradles and accompanying NiMH battery packs. Each radio also comes with a battery-level meter on its display to indicate the power level.

I have been searching for a great set of GMRS radios and I really wanted to like these, but alas it wasn't to be.The radios have a nice look to them, but that is about all.The buttons on the face of the radios are easy enough to press and operate, but not at the expense of the menu system. It takes so many presses just to do a simple change, I got quickly disgusted with it.Not only did the units require lots of button presses to make simple changes, but I needed to hold this CLOSE to my face just to see the TINY display. The PTT (push to talk) buttons are inset into the side of the units, making them near impossible to even press. My wife and I both had problems holding the buttons in just to talk for anything longer than two words because they required such force to press.I can say the rechargable batteries are good, but could be better if they were NiMH batteries instead of the inferior NiCD batteries included. Also, range was good since I could reach near a mile through thick trees and hilly terrain, maybe farther in open terrain.I ultimately found a far superior set of radios for a cheaper price in another brand with all the features I wanted that I have also reviewed on Amazon.

Motorola used to sell a Flexible Ear Receiver with a standard earphone plug (3.5mm, I think) that I used with a walkie talkie at work.It fit my ear perfectly, and is adjustable to boot (sorry, Brian, but maybe you're putting it on wrong...).It was about the only thing I could comfortably wear all day (I can't stand having one of those earbuds jammed in my canal).I found it also worked great with my portable radio, CD player, and laptop (mono only, obviously).Unfortunately, Motorola says they don't make that configuration any more. The Receiver shown here is their new model, which has a much smaller (2mm?) plug.If you have compatible equipment, however, this should be a comfortable and useful accessory. It's especially good if you listen more than you talk - I could hear everything with the radio clipped to my belt as I went about my day, and when I picked it up to talk into it, people could tell I was "on the phone."

This lightweight, palm-sized radio is also ideal as a neighborhood watch tool and kid-sitting aid. Each state-of-the-art radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and 99 privacy codes per channel to help reduce interference. Another great attribute of this Uniden two-way radio is its hands-free operation, which is made possible by a user selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) that can be used for automatic voice transmission. Transmission begins when you speak into the optional remote headset for snappy, hands-free communication that is both safe and efficient. The large number of channels and privacy codes give you several communication options that ensure you can almost always talk with your friends and family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. Plus, channels are easy to find, thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses to active channels while you watch the display. These two-way radios offer additional privacy and safety features. If you're having a conversation with sensitive matter, these radios offer a voice scramble feature that prevents outside monitoring. And for added safety, the radios receive emergency and weather broadcasts from the NOAA National Weather Service. When in Emergency/Weather mode, the radios monitor the selected emergency/weather channel for alerts, even when you're not actively communicating.
Additional features include a backlit LCD display that is easy to read under any lighting conditions, a keypad lock that prevents your settings from being accidentally changed, and a choice of five different call tones that offer distinctive ring options to easily identify who's calling. The radios are also equipped with a battery strength meter that monitors the status of the batteries so you can always stay in touch, a key beep audio confirmation of each button you press, and a "roger beep" tone to confirm to other users that you're done speaking. The built-in headset jack is for the optional headset mic, which enables hands-free operation. The radios are equipped with dual-location charging units that make it easy to keep your radios charged and ready to go, and they can also be powered by four AAA alkaline batteries (not included). As a bonus, each GMR895 radio also receives seven NOAA National Weather Service channels.
Browsing for channels is straightforward and intuitive thanks to the scan feature, which looks for active channels while you view the display, and the monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given channel. To transmit on a GMRS or FRS channel, merely press the PTT button while the scan is paused. It's important to note that the transmission range will vary depending on the channel and the surrounding terrain. Should the signal prove too weak for a given situation, however, you can extend it via the Power Boost button.
Additional features include a backlit LCD display with a battery strength meter, a keypad lock that keeps you from accidentally pressing buttons at the wrong time (such as when a radio is in your pocket), a silent alert option that noiselessly alerts you of an incoming call, and your choice of five different call tones. The radios come with a single charging cradle that can accommodate both radios at once, two NiMH rechargeable battery packs, and two belt clips for efficient transport. The entire bundle is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
