(More customer reviews)My battery died prematurely, probably due to the fact that the radio never leaves its base.In a house setting it's vitally important for a two-way radio to operate while in its charging base.The problem is that the battery rarely gets a chance to exercise and will probably die due to non-use.

This generic battery module is fully compatible with the radio and costs less than 50% of the original manufacturer's unit.

I tried to use regular AA-size NiMH battery in the radio--they work to operate the radio but they will not recharge inside the radio for reasons I cannot identify.This was a big problem.It was important to get a custom-made battery for that radio that matches the radio's charging circuit.Even my regular source of custom-made battery modules did not have a properly fitting battery module for my radios.

I'm not sure what the problem was with regular NiMH AA-sized batteries, but this battery solves it at the same price as four NiMH AA batteries and way cheaper than the batteries the original manufacturer offers, and even cheaper than the custom-made battery vendor.

**EDIT** This battery is going strong in late 2010.I believe the original radio was discounted due to battery failures.I still saved quite a bit even with this new battery.

(More customer reviews)Despite the current fad for multi-channel audio/video receivers, the majority of people still listen to music with two speakers and only need a two-channel stereo receiver to drive them. As fanatic audiophiles with excellent stereo speakers, my wife and I recently purchased this receiver because of very good previous experience with Yamaha electronics products. This is a superb receiver in all respects. Some people may think that they need more than this receiver's rated power of 50 watts per channel, but Yamaha's power ratings are extremely conservative and this receiver will drive virtually any speakers to deafening levels (which I don't recommend doing). More important than it's ample power is its very low distortion. Yamaha specializes in low distortion products for very clean sound. In addition to robust power and ultra-low distortion the RX-397 has a full complement of controls, plus an easy to use remote. But as a fanatic audiophile another feature, typical of Yamaha, which I particularly appreciate is a button which sends the signal from our CD player (or any other non-phono cartridge input) directly to the amplifier -- bypassing the preamp circuitry, which is not needed except when playing LPs (which most people rarely do these days) -- for the lowest distortion and best signal to noise ratio. There are plenty of slighty less expensive -- and less good -- stereo receivers available, but if you want suberb performance at a moderate price I highly recommend thisYamaha.

The Clarion EQS746 is more than just an equalizer. First thing, the sound quality of this equalizer is hard to find even in professional studio grade equipment, with Signal-To-Noise Ratio (S/N) of 105 dB, a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 0.005 % and Frequency Response from 10 Hz - 50,000 Hz, this equalizer is definitely for people who want to hear music as was recorded, no noise, no distortion, wide dynamic range means high quality sound without compromise.
To make things even better the Clarion EQS746 inputs/outputs are all gold-plated, so you get no corrosion and better signal transfer.

The Clarion EQS746 also acts as a Low-Pass Crossover with selectable frequency of 60 Hz or 90 Hz (12 dB/octave Crossover Slope), add to that a separate subwoofer volume level control at your finger tips and a stereo sub-out --which makes perfect sense-- you're in control of the bass!

The Clarion EQS746 has 6 RCA outputs, two for stereo subwoofer and 4 for two pair of stereo speakers (front/rear) you can operate the device with only front or rear, or with both connected. Moreover your get a fader control to adjust the sound level between the front and rear speakers.

The main volume control is another story, because this is not just an equalizer as I said before it also acts as a pre-amp (AKA line-driver) with a Maximum Output Level of 7V RMS!

One last thing about this beautiful device is the AUX input with an easy to use "push-push" AUX button near the volume control. It means that you can select between twoaudio sources with just one click. Like you can connect your head unit as the primary source of sound and connect another --let's say portable audio player-- to the AUX input, and then select what audio source you want to listen to without having to plug/pull cables while on the road, how easy can that be! Oh did I mention that you can control the AUX input level per channel. I think you now get the picture why I chose this device and why I love it so much.

What's next? I think Clarion can add more than 7 EQ bands, let's say 15 so you can have more control over the sound shape.
The Low-Pass Crossover could have had more frequencies to select instead of two, 60 Hz is not deep bass enough for some people who like to tune at less than 40 Hz but anyway that's not a big deal because your subwoofer amplifier will take care of this.

I highly recommend this product.

USA-Spec PA15-HON2 Honda to iPod Interface Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered a USA Spec PA15HON2Y to use my iPhone 3G in my 2005 Accord.I looked at multiple products including a parrot MKi9100 and DICE.Ended up choosing going with a USA Spec and a separate Parrot bluetooth unit (MK3000) since it 1) was price right and 2) offered integration with the factory radio.

My Accord has built in Navigation so I wanted something that would play nice.The USA Spec unit does integrate with my nav and radio.You can set up the USA Spec to display using text of what is playing (Artist, name, category).This will scroll through the upper radio display on the Accord as well as on the Audio menu on the navigation screen.If you want text, it will put the iPod menu on the iPhone into accessory mode and will not allow you to select specific songs directly from the iPhone.You will need to use the stereo controls or the steering wheel controls to scroll.There is the option to give you direct access to the iPod screen (you adjust modes by the pre programmed XM stations ie XM station 1 would be Artist, 2 would be by Category, 3, all songs, 6 is direct ipod).If you do choose to toggle to the direct iPod control, you lose the text - it'll just show as iPod.

The USA Spec unit will also allow you to keep XM functionality in the Accord.The XM stations show up on XM2 mode.... I don't subscribe to XM but can still hear their barker/preview stations.

One concern I had was that I definitely did not want to lose my navigation controls... safe to say it all still works... the Nav still shows maps, etc as well as provides voice directions.It will continue to mute (like it normally does) XM, FM, and iPod music when it gives you directions.

Installation wasn't too bad - took awhile to get everything out (and yes you have to take out the factory navigation to get to the right plug). After you pull out the nav unit, it's plug and play (unplug the blue plug from the back of the Honda Nav, plug in the male end of the cable that attaches to the USA Spec unit, plug in the additional adapter, then plug in the original Honda Nav plug right into the additional adapter (the adapter allows you to keep your XM).

I used some heavy duty auto tape to secure the litte USA spec box on top of the nav DVD drive and ran the ipod cable through the empty slot below (had to cut a small opening). I put everything back together and everything is hidden and seamless (except the adapter cord that plugs right into the iPhone).It does charge the iPhone too!

It sounds great.... (at least the same quality of the CD player).A couple of other great things about the USA Spec - it has another set of audio inputs.I plan on using these eventually when I add video through my navigation to get sound in since all of the video adapters still require another sound adapter.Also, it works great with Pandora or streaming podcasts through itunes (if you're in an area that has good AT&T coverage).I added the Parrot CK3000 bluetooth since I didn't want to have to unplug the iphone to answer it... the iPhone plays nice with both at the same time... if I'm listening to my podcasts and get a phone call, the music gradually softens and the phone rings.

The new DICE silverline units looks like it performs the same way but it was $40 more than the cheapest price I could find with the USA Spec.

Overall, I give this 4 stars and would recommend it.... only thing I wish it would do is also show song text even if it was in direct mode.... maybe this is a limitation on apple's part where it doesn't send text data if your using it as an accessory. Also, each time you plug your iPhone in, you get a nag screen about it isn't made for the iPhone and if you want to turn on Airplane mode to minimize interference... I hit no and it works fine.

This car has considerable rode noise, and if the volume was turned up on the speakers, the sound quality became so bad it was worse than the noise. I purchased these speakers in the hope that I could drown out the road noise at high speeds so I could still listen to music while driving. I drive to Utah (about 5 hours) twice a month. In this my primary goal, I have been extremely pleased. These seem like a very nice speaker.

The radio in this car is not a high quality unit, so I cannot accurately rate the quality reproduction of the highs and the lows, but my overall impression of the sound that comes from these speakers seems very clean. My last speakers I could barely hear the base, and now I can hear it and even feel it (these speakers are in the panel down by my legs). Voices come out much crisper than the old speakers. I would definitely recommend these speakers. I will update this review after I replace the stereo.

I use this Belkin splitter to attach my muvo (mp3 flash player) and ,sometimes, my mp3 portable iriver cd player to my stereo system.Works great.I don't have a problem with the connection being loose, but I don't have an ipod to test this out with.My mp3 cd players and the few flash mp3 players I've tried work fine with this. Belkin, as usual, offers a quality product.

(More customer reviews)I have had the Monitor 30's for almost a year now and am incredibly impressed.Great bang for the buck (paid $140 on sale at CC).I am using these as fronts in my 7.1 surround set up, with Polk M10's as the surrounds and a Pioneer VSX-1018 avr and Sony 40S2010 LCD.I am still using a crappy jvc htib 60watt powered sub, but am planning on treating myself to a Avs123 X-sub for Christmas. :)Anyway, I am here to talk about the Polk M30.My set up is for a 15'x17'den.That's a fairly small room and I have a wife that agitated with overpowering sound (yeah, my love for audio equipment does not always over well).Although I would have loved to go for a floorstanding speaker, I agreed to stick to bookshelf size to keep my wife happy.The M30 certainly fit the bill.They have a clean, accurate sound with excellent highs and mids.The sound is linear and smooth, with a warm tone.If you like a brighter sounding speaker, these probably aren't for you and you might be better off with the Infinity Beta series.As far as bass goes, on my radio shack SLP, they drop as low as 50hz, which is pretty decent compared to most of the bookshelves I have heard and better than the specs indicate.Still, these speakers, by themselves don't produce enough bass depth for stand alone duty.You will need a decent sub that can make up for what the M30's lack and, given the m30 range, setting the crossover on the amp at 80 is the way to go with these babies.

These speakers are designed for a tonal match with all other speakers in the monitor line and the M10's are perfect for satellite duty.I would recommend spending a little extra for the Polk CS1 center over the CSM (returned it).As for a sub to match, CNET likes the match between the Polk PWS10 with the Monitor 30s (used in their test).I auditioned the PSW10 and felt it was lacking umph.I preferred the sound of the Velodyne VX-10 or Dayton 120 (although I am going to take the advice my audiofile friends and go for the Avs123 sub-x for $200).

The bottomline, the Monitor 30 is a high quality bookshelf speaker for a fair price.If you're a hardcore audiofile looking for paradigm and definitive bookshelves, the M30 isn't going to work for you.However, if you're looking for a nice sounding speaker but don't want to spend $800, these are ideal.Certainly, they blow away anything from sony, pioneer, yamaha and Bose etc.

(More customer reviews)I have done extensive research on numerous computer speakers, everything from the simple 2.0 to 5.1 surround sound configurations for the past 6 months. I ended buying these Gigaworks Series II 2.0 speakers. Why? Because I couldn't have spent my $100 on anything else better.

Delicated tweeters for your high notes, midrange drivers for your mids, and the BasXport on top of the speakers for them lows, and all in a small 2.0 system! A lot of speakers do not allow the user to adjust their treble and bass, these do. Not a bass person? Dial it down to 0 and turn up the treble, or max out on both and anything in between. That's what the dials are there for, because not everyone is content with preset one-off factory settings.

There are users who complaint about the bright blue light glaring at them when it is on, I don't think it is that bad unless you are sleeping with them on. Some users also said that the speakers don't do too well at high volumes, as in the sound start to become unclear/muffled. I say it is true somewhat, just try not to turn it up past 75% and you should be good. Even at that level it is loud enough to be heard in my entire house, you're not running a nightclub in your house afterall.

(More customer reviews)Just to clarify, you get TWO SPEAKERS with this and any other Boss speaker item on the site (besides subs).I don't know what the other reviewer was thinking.He said they sound alright and "you get what you pay for" but he gave them 1 star?And he complained that he got two instead of one?Anyway...

These speakers sound great.I hooked them up directly to my head (a Sony aftermarket radio) and for a first timer I installed them myself in my little Honda hatchback in a couple of hours with a dremel (the first one took an hour an a half, after that I knew what I was doing so it was a breeze).They look really nice and can handle highs and mids real well, thebass gets a little iffy on higher volumes but hey, that's what subs are for.Less than ten bucks per speaker.You can't complain.I'm definitely sticking with Boss when I buy my amp and sub.

PS:If your car has a red theme going on, these look really nice.

Uniden Atlantis 250BK 16-Channel VHF Waterproof Two-Way Marine Radio Review

(More customer reviews)Got this for my small boat, it was on sale at West Marine and listed as 'waterproof' (who wants a boat radio that's not waterproof?).Takes multiple power sources, does dual watch, weather band, and the price was right.

After it charged up it worked great.We used it several times for coordinating activites without incident.

Until, while helping trailer the boat, my friend slips on some seaweed and this 'waterproof' radio hits the water.It was in MAYBE a foot of water for half a second, but that was enough.The PTT button was stuck on, the button would physically push and release but the circuit stayed active and the radio kept transmitting- salt water had shorted the PTT switch.
Turning the radio off and on was no help- it refused to power up with the PTT switch held down (just made a beeping noise).

Further research reveals that this unit is rated JIS4.According to [...], JIS4 means 'splash resistant'.
Most of the other marine portables are rated JIS7 (same as IPX7)- can be submerged under 1 meter (3 feet) of water for 30 minutes with no ill effects.Some are rated JIS8 (indefinitely submersible up to mfr. specified depth).

Many of the other units also float, and most aren't that much more expensive than this one.

You might check out the Uniden MHS75, which is actually cheaper, smaller, and is JIS8 rated.It also has SAME weather radio alerts, which this doesn't.

I'm giving this 2/5 stars because I think a boating radio, to be used on the water, should be more than just 'splash proof', especially when nearly all the competition is JIS7.And had me and my friends been stuck on the water instead of on the boat launch, the unexpected failure of this unit would have put us in serious trouble.
