Nady Bike-to-Bike Radio Communicator MRC-11X 2-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)For a basic communication device, I feel the radio has too many function buttons. Radio works well using push-to-talk button. The supplied headset is for an open-face helmet. There is no option for a closed-face helmet headset with the initial purchase. You will need to order one separatly. With the helmet and headset I have, hearing at speed above 45mph is a problem due to wind noise. As for factory support, the question I emailed two weeks ago about the headset is still to be answered. Ride Smart.

Audiovox Multi Radio Station FRS1000 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I just purchased the FRS-1000 Base station and I have to say I'm very pleased. It works fine with my BellSouth FRS Hand Held units. The station is small and compact, no larger than a standard intercom. The manual is a bit hard to figure out some of the functions but if you play with it, you'll get the hang of all it can do.
One function I especially love is it's ability to scan all 14 FRS channels, so I can monitor all channels for incoming signals. It also has a function whereby you can monitor two channels at once, if you have people using two different channels, you can hear conversations on both.
The NOAA weather function is a no-brainer, just press the button and you have instant weather information access. The unit also features a "Roger Beep", this is a short beep that is attached to the end of every transmission. (It can be turned off) I like it because it distinguishes when a transmission is coming from the base station. My hand held units do not have this beep so any transmission from base is clearly identified by this sound.
You can also sellect from 4 different "Call Tones". This allows you to define the type of call signal the unit emitts when signaling other units. If you have more than one base station this would be handy to differentiate them.
When they say "Two mile range" their not kidding, the unit belts out enough power to talk and listen somewhat beyond that. (a friend and I tested it, he on a bike with a hand held and me on the base!)
This unit could have many uses, I use it for camping and keeping up with friends hiking. It could be used in a factory too, or as a way to keep track of neighborhood kids. In fact, as I scan channels I often hear the neighborhood kids playing and talking. And with it's range, I hear other neighborhoods too.
I must admit it's fun to listen in on their play. Plus during the day I can hear workers who use FRS to talk to each other.
FRS is not as crowded as CB bandwiths, it's easy to find a clear quiet channel to use if you don't want distractions.
If you're looking for a unit to use for work or in a factory, I'd recommend you pick an odd channel like "3" or "6". Most units default to channel "1" when turned on and this is the channel that you'll hear the most chatter from the neighborhood.
The FRS-1000 is a great buy, it comes with rechargable batteries and they charge while the unit is on and plugged up with the supplied adapter. So you can use it portable or plugged in.It has a tall antenna that will swivel up or down depending on if you have it mounted on a wall or sitting on a table. The screen is backlit so you can easily read the display and you'll get used to the various display icons in no time. Look for other units like this to hit the market soon as FRS becomes more popular, this is really the way to go.

Garmin Rino 130 5-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)The Garmin 130 arrived at my house about 36 hours before the deer hunting opener here in Wisconsin.I ordered a DVD getting started tutorial from another web site which got me started with the basics although the 130 is a feature-packed device that will be sure to keep the most gadget inclinced occupied for quite a while, but the basic features are fairly intuitive and easy to use with two basic buttons:the "click-stick" and the page/cancel button.I don't think the DVD tutorial was worth the money, but it's hard to say how much harder it would have been to get started without seeing it being operated by someone on the video.
A member of my party had a Garmin 120 last fall and I was anxious to unlock the power of the position tracking capabilities during the hunting season (for both him and myself). It proved very valuable while making drives with the compatible Garmin 120 as we were able to see each other's position in nearly real-time.It's not quite real time because the position of your buddies only updates when they release the talk button on their radio, so when we were trying to be quiet, we just got used to frequently keying the mic without transmitting any message.
I've read some complaints about the Garmin 130's radio capabilities, but I have to say it was one of my unexpected surprises with this unit.I had always borrowed a Motorola 2-way radio to use in previous seasons, so I not only stopped mooching off my buddies radios this year, but had best transmitting and receiving radio out of the group of 5 radios (and it was better than the Rino 120, too).On more than 1 occaision I had to translate for two buddies that couldn't hear each other, but I could hear both of them and they could hear me, so I translated for them (maybe I was right in the middle of them, but I think my radio was consistently a better performer under the same conditions and ranges throughout the season).
The 120 doesn't have as much memory and based on the comparison of the 130 and 120 in our camps this year, the satellite signal reception (affects accuracy of your position) and the radio signal strength were both better on the 130.
Other than my rifle, there's no other gear I will rely on more during a hunting season.

Product Description:
The the most feature-rich device in the Rino family, Garmin's Rino 130 combination 2-way FRS/GMRS radio and GPS receiver comes fully loaded with an electronic compass, a barometric sensor, a weather receiver for 7 NOAA weather channels, and 24 MB of internal memory for downloading and storing MapSource detail--including data from products like U.S. Topo 24K, U.S. Topo, Recreational Lakes, BlueChart, and MetroGuide (MapSource products sold separately).
The Rino 130 is also outfitted with a marine-point database and a basemap of North and South America. The database includes nautical navaids for North and South America. The Americas Highway basemap includes the United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America, and covers an area from W180 to W30 Longitude and S60 to N75 Latitude. Also included is a high-level worldwide map with political boundaries and major cities. Among many other included elements are oceans, rivers, and lakes (greater than 30 square miles), principal cities and many smaller cities and towns, major interstates and principal highways, and political boundaries (state and international borders).
Integration has its advantages: the Rino 130 sends and receives GPS locations using FRS channels and shows them on the map. The GPS device is a 12-channel, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver. WAAS, which stands for Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), is the global-positioning-system of choice for mariners. The handheld's built-in electronic compass give a heading while you're standing still, and its barometric altimeter provides accurate elevation and pressure readings to help you identify and analyze weather conditions.
The Rino 130 also provides two-way radio communication with a transmission range of up to two miles using FRS channels and up to five miles with GMRS (be aware that use of GMRS requires an FCC license). The integration of two-way radio and GPS lets you transmit your position with a simple button press, so others can easily navigate to your position. The Rino 130 also has a polling feature so you can manually request GPS location information from other Rino units.
You get 14 FRS channels, 8 GMRS channels, and 8 GMRS repeater channels, as well as 38 sub-audible squelch codes per transmission channel for semi-private radio communications.
The unit's ergonomic design grants single-handed operation, with its Call, Page mode, and Press-To-Talk (PTT) buttons mounted on the side, Power/Backlighting button on top, Volume and Zoom buttons on front, and a Thumb Stick positioned in the center. The thumb stick allows channel selection and volume adjustment in FRS/GMRS mode, as well as quick map panning, enter, and selection functions in GPS mode.
Other features include a backlit display (160 x 160 pixels), external voice activation (VOX), waterproof construction to IPX-7 standards (immersible in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes), storage for up to 500 waypoints with graphic identification and 20 reversible routes, 10,000 trackpoints and up to 20 saved tracks to retrace your path or a companion's path via the location-reporting feature, trip computer with speed tracking, sunrise/sunset read out, trip time, and trip distance, and multiple grid formats including MGRS and Loran TD. The Rino 130 even sends and receives short text notes for quiet communication.
The Rino 130 has a battery life of 14 hours (typical use) on 3 AA alkaline batteries (not included).
What's in the Box
Rino 130 receiver, a PC-interface cable, a wrist strap, a belt clip, a user's manual, and a quick-reference guide.

Polk Audio Monitor 30 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I have had the Monitor 30's for almost a year now and am incredibly impressed.Great bang for the buck (paid $140 on sale at CC).I am using these as fronts in my 7.1 surround set up, with Polk M10's as the surrounds and a Pioneer VSX-1018 avr and Sony 40S2010 LCD.I am still using a crappy jvc htib 60watt powered sub, but am planning on treating myself to a Avs123 X-sub for Christmas. :)Anyway, I am here to talk about the Polk M30.My set up is for a 15'x17'den.That's a fairly small room and I have a wife that agitated with overpowering sound (yeah, my love for audio equipment does not always over well).Although I would have loved to go for a floorstanding speaker, I agreed to stick to bookshelf size to keep my wife happy. The M30 certainly fit the bill. They have a clean, accurate sound with excellent highs and mids. The sound is linear and smooth, with a warm tone.If you like a brighter sounding speaker, these probably aren't for you and you might be better off with the Infinity Beta series. As far as bass goes, on my radio shack SLP, they drop as low as 50hz, which is pretty decent compared to most of the bookshelves I have heard and better than the specs indicate.Still, these speakers, by themselves don't produce enough bass depth for stand alone duty. You will need a decent sub that can make up for what the M30's lack and, given the m30 range, setting the crossover on the amp at 80 is the way to go with these babies.
These speakers are designed for a tonal match with all other speakers in the monitor line and the M10's are perfect for satellite duty.I would recommend spending a little extra for the Polk CS1 center over the CSM (returned it).As for a sub to match, CNET likes the match between the Polk PWS10 with the Monitor 30s (used in their test).I auditioned the PSW10 and felt it was lacking umph.I preferred the sound of the Velodyne VX-10 or Dayton 120 (although I am going to take the advice my audiofile friends and go for the Avs123 sub-x for $200).
The bottomline, the Monitor 30 is a high quality bookshelf speaker for a fair price. If you're a hardcore audiofile looking for paradigm and definitive bookshelves, the M30 isn't going to work for you. However, if you're looking for a nice sounding speaker but don't want to spend $800, these are ideal.Certainly, they blow away anything from sony, pioneer, yamaha and Bose etc.

Sirius SDSP5V1 Sportster 5 Dock and Play Radio with PowerConnect Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Good radio, easy to install. The Pros: can change colors for display, however, display picture is the same (with Howard Stern looming in the background).Comes with remote, which can be handy, depending on where you install the radio.Easy to see display during the day and at night, even with polarized glasses (some reviewers stated that this is not so).For reference, The Xact one I had before this had a blue display which was close to impossible to see during the day, in particular with polarized sunglasses. The Cons: the FM transmitter is a lot weaker than the one from my previous radio (Xact).Activation:The legendary bad SIRIUS customer service sure was confirmed trying to activate this radio.I bought this as the replacement for my old radio which stopped working correctly. All I needed SIRIUS to do was deactivate my old radio and activate this one.It took about 1.5 hours to get this fairly straightforward task accomplished, mostly because I was put on hold several times for what felt forever.Best tip I can give: IF YOU BUY A NEW RADIO AND WANT TO REPLACE YOUR OLD ONE WITH IT, CHOOSE 'CANCEL SERVICE' WHEN YOU CALL SIRIUS.Otherwise, you will experience the same odyssey I went through (I chose "CHANGE SERVICE"):You first get transferred to Bangalore (I assume) where you are told that they CANNOT swap your two radios (i.e. cancel one, activate the other). They WILL tell you that you need to first activate your new one, which (of course) they are very happy to help you with. They will try to upsell you (no surprise) and tell you that you have to pay an activation fee.And since I had two radios, I got a discount(lasting for how long it takes to cancel the other radio).I explained in the beginning what I wanted to do, but of course they just go through their script. After the activation I requested to connect me to the 'department' to cancel my other radio. Of course I was put at the end of the waiting queue, after a few minutes my connection was lost, so I called again and chose the "CANCEL SERVICE" option. After about another 20 min of waiting, I was connected to the US service site and told the person that I needed to cancel service on a radio. After logging in to my account the person noticed that I had two radios, so I explained what I wanted to do.The good news is that the person got upset about how this was handled and talked to her supervisor (again I was put on hold). She then told my that my activation fee for the other radio would get reimbursed and that my old radio was cancelled.I hope that this radio will last a few years so I don't have to deal with their customer service any time soon...
UPDATE: as of today (12 Nov2010) I still have not received my promised refund for the activation.

Midland AVP2 Dual Desktop Charger for Midland G Series Radios Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)We bought 2 pairs of radios and 2 charger kits.Nothing in the instructions warns against deep-cycling the batteries.I fully charged all 4 batteries the first time, then left the radios on until the batteries were fully discharged.Three out of four of the batteries would not recharge.I hope they'll replace the batteries, but still, we'll have to remember not to leave a radio on in a coat pocket or something.
UPDATE:I talked to Midland Tech Service. They sent replacement batteries but also suggested that I remove the old batteries for 15 minutes to allow the radios to re-set.The "bad" batteries then accepted a charge.A cute trick, but I had to call Midland to get it.

Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I ordered 4 sets of these for use in a large warehousing operation. Our associates really like the product, but we have had to return 1 set.Of the 2 radios I returned, one would not power on and the other one had very low volume when turned up all of the way. Creative Labs GigaWorks T20 Series II 2.0 Multimedia Speaker System with BasXPort Technology Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I have done extensive research on numerous computer speakers, everything from the simple 2.0 to 5.1 surround sound configurations for the past 6 months. I ended buying these Gigaworks Series II 2.0 speakers. Why? Because I couldn't have spent my $100 on anything else better.
Delicated tweeters for your high notes, midrange drivers for your mids, and the BasXport on top of the speakers for them lows, and all in a small 2.0 system! A lot of speakers do not allow the user to adjust their treble and bass, these do. Not a bass person? Dial it down to 0 and turn up the treble, or max out on both and anything in between. That's what the dials are there for, because not everyone is content with preset one-off factory settings.
There are users who complaint about the bright blue light glaring at them when it is on, I don't think it is that bad unless you are sleeping with them on. Some users also said that the speakers don't do too well at high volumes, as in the sound start to become unclear/muffled. I say it is true somewhat, just try not to turn it up past 75% and you should be good. Even at that level it is loud enough to be heard in my entire house, you're not running a nightclub in your house afterall.

(More customer reviews)I'm fairly pleased with this little retractable cable.Fortunately, I had read the other reviews, so I was not surprised by the short length and it works for me.Some things you should know:
* As other reviewers mention, this is not a 6' cable. The technical details have the correct 2.5' length, but the description is incorrect.
* The retractor mechanism is a little cheap and I've gotten it tangled a couple of times. That being said, I've always been able to untangle it and it has recovered.
* The rubber around the plug ends is a good size for iPods and most stereo inputs, but it is too wide for the audio jack in an iPhone.I took a sharp knife to one end of the cable and shaved down the sides, then it worked fine even for the recessed iPhone jack. This wasn't too hard to do, though that cable end doesn't look too pretty now.
In spite of these reservations, the cable works well, the audio quality seems fine, and it is small, convenient, and nicely functional.

Motorola T5500AA 5-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)used them several times in the alps and the rockies.they worked great on the same sides of the mountain.if it was much more spread out, no workie.you can't beat it for the price and it came in handy when we lost my chic for 4 hours in a blizzard.we found her only by using them.however i might add battery life will only last a one week trip.pretty poor for that many batteries (3 AA's each).

Griffin 4045-TRPAUTOS iTrip Auto FM Transmitter with SmartScan for iPod Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)On my quest to find a FM Transmitter, I bought a different itrip from Griffin, but it did not charge my ipod nano 4th Gen.So I called Grifin and they told me that in order to charge my ipod nano 4th Gen that it needs to be an itrip with Smart Scan technology. So i returned it and bought this one, and i'm very happy with it.
1.This unit charges our ipod nano 4th Gen no problem. The ring of light on the cigarette lighter plug lights up red when initially connected denoting power to FM transmitter, then amber once the ipod is connected (charging), and then it turns green when the ipod is fully charged.
2.I have a sealed radio in my car so therefore don't have an audio input unfortunatley (2005 Volvo s40 2.4i) and so FM Transmitters are a way of life for me.Your not going to get the perfect sound quality from these like you would with a direct input, so check to see if you got an aux input in your car first and then just buy a charger and a double male head phone wire.I have a Sirius Radio has an FM Transmitter so i'm use to dealing with changing frequencys every so often.I live in NJ and am in NYC and Long Island a lot.My car can tune to 87.9 which I use for the sirius radio almost everywhere, but sometimes while in NY I use 93.3 (pretty high on the frequency list, but for some reason it's clear).
3.Check to make sure your car can go into 87.9 range first, these channels are hardly ever used by radio stations, then switch this grifin itrip autoscan to international frequencies just press function, then press AND HOLD mode for roughly ten secons until a new menu appears. It'll give you US, EU, and JP choices above each of the three buttons on the itrip.I picked JP (for japan) which enables all the normal US frequencies plus the lower range, lower then my car can go, my car only goes to 87.3 or something.A funny thing is that when i tune my car and itrip to 87.9 i get static, but if i keep the itrip at 87.9 and tune my car to 87.8 it comes in perfectly clear. It doesn't do that in my wife's car, 87.9 is 87.9.Just set one of your car radio presets to that and your good to go!
4.I took someone else recomendation to adjust the ipods equalizer to "Acoustic" and that definetly sounds better.
5.Long story short, I like this product, I got it for a heck of a lot cheaper then any FM transmitter at the apple store. One downfall which people do mention is that it is a tad bit hard to read the display of the itrip when you got a glare, but you can set your own presets on the itrip.Autoscan function is stupid, but apparently this is the model that'll charge the ipod nano 4th gen. Scan the radio yourself for static/ or free channels and then tune the itrip to those.
