Coleman Two-Way Radio Review

I purchased this because its waterproof.I tend to do a lot of water activities with friends. This had caught my eye, because I had recently purchased the coleman transmit paddle vest. That particular vest had one of these built in.Amazon always has the best price around, so I bought one.Its about a size of a pager...if you remember what those are...hah!

It has a nice sturdy feel with the batteries inserted. The reception was decent, but the distance was short.I would say around ?-.5 mile at best.I mainly use this for paddling where its nice and quite.I tried to use this on a jetski...its just not loud enough to talk over the motor.I found tha it had a lanyard hole/attachment on the device.I used a zip tie to make a loop and put a Carabiner so that I can fix this to any loops available.
i did dunk this under water with no issues at all.I don't remember if it floated or not.It has multichannel and multiple calling beeps.I am pretty happy with it.a definite must for kayakers or canoeing.

Midland Outfitter Series GXT785VP3 42-Channel 34-Mile 2-Way GMRS Radio with NOAA All Hazard /Weather Alert, Rechargeable Batteries, and Desktop Charger (Pair, Mossy Oak) Review

Midland Outfitter Series GXT785VP3 42-Channel 34-Mile 2-Way GMRS Radio with NOAA All Hazard /Weather Alert, Rechargeable Batteries, and Desktop Charger
Average Reviews:

We use radios on our 20-acre property, where we're thinning trees and doing other outdoor work. Radios are a lot better than hand signals when we're working together, and easier than running around looking for each other when we're apart. Since some of the work is dangerous, radios are a good safety measure.

We bought these radios recently to replace a pair of the predecessor model that we wore out. (Too much rough handling broke one of the antennas, I think, and reception went downhill.)

We have been happy with both pair. This model has more channels, otherwise the same features. Power and reception are very good in hills and forest over the 1/3-mile maximum range we use them in. One battery charge lasts all day.

The top volume does not seem to be quite as loud on the new pair. I wish they came in some color other than camo -- drop one on the forest floor and you'll need the other radio to locate it.

We used over-the-ear boom headsets with the first pair, and we got the "security" headsets for this pair. We wear them under hearing-protection earmuffs around noisy equipment. Nonetheless, the noise of a diesel tractor or chainsaw will drown out the transmission, whether you're speaking or listening.

The headsets and batteries are interchangeable with the previous model; the charging bases are not.

Cobra MR HH425LI VP 15-Channel VHF/GMRS Two-Way Marine Radio Review

Cobra MR HH425LI VP 15-Channel VHF/GMRS Two-Way Marine Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: Covers Marine VHF, GMRS and overlaps FRS. Comes with everything you could possibly need, especially Li-rechargeable, drop-in charger, AC and DC power cords, and AA battery case. Good controls, metal frame, swivel-off belt clip, easy to read display. Detachable antenna with SMA connector and wrist strap. The documentation is better tha most.

Cons: Squelch (uncoded) and coded squelches take 1 second to unlock. FRS frequencies 1-7 are fixed to GMRS power and frquencies 8-14 are not included.

This is a very complete product especially for the money. You will not have to buy any accessories except perhaps the remote mic.Especially impressive is the inclusion of an AA battery case in addition to the rechargeable battery pack. You get both AC and DC power cords.

There are several subtle things that are "right" about this product. The audio is much stronger than most handhelds. There are actual knobs, not pushbuttons, for squelch and volume controls that are easily manipulated. The controls are logically arranged. The drop-in charger has a plate that adapts it for charging the battery alone, without the radio. The RF squelch will open the tone or DCS squelches allowing accurate, single-control setting of the RF squelch threshold or opening up of the squelch for receiving weak signals. The backlight is orange and bright enough to read easily. The LCD display is easy to read from a normal viewing angle.

I have not had enough experience with the "say again" feature to determine its usefulness but it is well implemented. The audio quality is as good as the original transmission and you get 20 seconds of stored audio. Replay is counted down on the display and you can cancel playback by merely tapping the PTT.

Weather reception has several interesting alerting features including WX alert and SAME monitoring. I did not test these as of this writing, but the WX reception is excellent.

The only negatives I could find about this radio involved the squelch and the lack of FRS power levels and FRS frquencies 8-14.

The squelch open or unlock times were annoyingly long. Uncoded squelch open time on VHF marine or GMRS bands was the better part of a second. This may not seem like much until you consider the fact that most people start speaking just a fraction of a second before they key the mic. With this radio it will lead to the guaranteed loss of up to the first two seconds of audio. For those with a long "uhhhhh" before their real message, that will work. But for most others, it will result in a lot of missed calls. The unlock time for coded squelch (tone or DCS) is almost exactly one second, making performance here slightly worse.

Given the completeness of the product, the fact that a power setting for FRS compatibility and frequencies 8-14 are missing is puzzling. Still, I believe in actual use this limitation is more than easily overcome.

After testing it looks like I'm going to be getting a few more of these. You really can't beat them especially for the price.

UPDATE: With over a year of use on many of these units I can report they are still all working well. Most notably the battery HOLDS its charge seemingly forever. We know this is NOT true but I have yet to see a case of a self-discharge over even a few months of sitting on a shelf, sometimes in heat or cold extremes. Most radio batteries are notoriously bad this way, but to my great surprise, the batteries that came with the batch I got are all still performing quite beyond expectations. Good batteries seem to be a rarity these days!

Motorola 53617 2-Way Radio NiMH Rechargeable Battery Pack Review

Motorola 53617 2-Way Radio NiMH Rechargeable Battery Pack
Average Reviews:

Be careful when ordering this product. The description does not include the models that this battery pack fits, so you would assume that the pack fit in the most common models, of which we have several, like the T4000 and T5000 series - the ones that fit the packs with 3 AA batteries. In fact, this product is the battery pack that fits a smaller amount of models, like the SX series with the AAA battery packs. So I ended up with a whole bunch of the wrong battery packs, and the seller ANTonline would not help me (they gave me a generic response to my first complaint and then did not respond at all to my second contact).

Motorola 53725 SLK Headset with Swivel Boom Mic (Black) Review

Motorola 53725 SLK Headset with Swivel Boom Mic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, it doesn't use batteries, it doesn't light up, and it doesn't cost a lot. But this headset/boom mic is an essential accessory for the TalkAbouts for this simple reason: TalkAbouts have voice-operated control (VOX) whenused with a plugin headset/mic. We have also evaluated the earbud/mic combofor bike riders and found it almost unworkable (it picks up road noise and,to me, the earbud causes excruciating pain after a day of use). The headsetis a much better solution. The band actually fits OVER a safety helmet, andthe closed-foam-cell rubber pad grips the plastic shell securely. The boommic rejects most road noise, and soon becomes forgotten in the course ofroutine use. (It quickly comes back to the foreground when I try to sipfrom my water bottle!) If you purchase one of the TalkAbouts, consider thisas your second accessory purchase -- your first should be a carryingholster or case. Now, if Motorola would only agree on a partnership withJABRA Technologies to produce a JABRA Earset for the TalkAbouts, myhappiness would be complete ...

I had been universally disappointed with all the "toy" walkie talkies we'd purchased for my kids.Growing up, I remember having lots of fun with them.Unfortunately, today's toy versions usually only work across the room at best. Not fun.

These were a good and inexpensive compromise.Fancier than I was looking for, but very functional.Work and transmit from all over the house. As another reviewer points out, these are not transmitting power houses and are not advertised as such.Good for general family use and the kids love them.I've been keeping them set on the approved FRS stations channels 8 - 14 which do NOT require a license.

The radio also transmits on GMRS frequencies which require a license. From the user manual:

"The LXT112 Series operates on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies which require an FCC (Federal Communications Commission)
license. You must be licensed prior to operating on channels 1 - 7 or 15 - 22, which comprise the GMRS channels of the LXT112 Series."
