Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording Review

Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already have a couple software programs that will automatically record and save radio programming but when the Radio Shark was announced, I couldn't resist. Mac elegance, simplicity and functionality. Or so I thought. The product is solid, well made and the software is easy to use. Unfortunately, the reception is unacceptably poor in my suburban, residential area. Every radio I own from clock radios, a couple Tivoli Pal's, a built in-whole house system, mini-systems and so on receive programming easily. The Radio Shark's reception is inferior to even the lowliest of portables. I've tried everything I can think of. Coiling the USB cable, moving it to every place within reach, using a high dollar shielded usb extension cable which also allowed me to move the Shark further from the computer), using the Radio Shark's headphone input with a pair of ear buds and a minijack to rca cable (as Griffin's website suggests). Nothing seems to help. I have two other radios within 18 inches of computers and they were pretty easy to set up and receive clear, static free programming. The Radio Shark has been a huge disappointment. I should have learned my lesson after purchasing the Power Mate from this company. The Power mate (ditto for the Radio Shark) is very high quality piece of hardware from a fit and finish standpoint but the software was glitchy with a pc. Maybe it would have been better with a mac. But I digress. Perhaps if you live far from all urban and suburban interference or live on a hill with better line of site to the towers you want to receive from, the Radio Shark might be fine. For the rest of us, the Radio Shark is likely to disappoint. If you want to time shift radio programming, I can recommend two excellent pieces of software. High Criteria's Total Recorder Pro (for the pc) and Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro for the Mac. I don't work for or profit from either comany. I use both on a daily basis. Both are rock solid. All you need to do is connect a radio to your pc or mac and you're set.

Kaito KA009 - Portable radio - red Review

Kaito KA009 - Portable radio - red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kaito Electronics is a company to watch as they climb to the top. I was looking for a radio that works during emergencies, when there's no power. This little radio does so much more. Works on Solar, or by dynamo if you don't want to plug it in, or even if you don't want to use batteries, it has it's own internal NiMH battery charged by the Sun or your own cranking. This radio is truly portable and very convenient to carry. The reception is great and I wish all radios were made to this standard. It even has a super bright LED flashlight built right in! I originally bought 2 of the KA-009 radios in red. One for me, one for a present. After receiving the radio (super fast delivery to Hawaii) I realized I thought I was buying the one that allows you to charge your cell phone. That's the KA-009R. After speaking with Kaito Electronics they were very nice and exchanged the radio(I had to take care of the shipping). Unfortunately the KA-009R recharging radio only comes in black. I say this because I'm not one of those people who loves the color red, but after having the Red KA-009, I fell in love with it. It's not just red, it's a really cool candy apple red with metal flakes in the paint, like you'd see in a really expensive car paint job. I can't say enough about this product, I usually don't have the time to write recommendations, but this product is worthy. A well made product, and a great price, easy on the ears and wallet. This product(and a lot of others made by them) are truly "Green" products that are friendly for the environment. You won't find a product like this one anywhere else in the world yet, with the quality and price. It is very versatile and super light to carry. I take mine with me everywhere, and you should too. Every household should have one or more of these, great for emergencies and during non-emergencies. A must have, keep one in your car.

RCA 7-2887 Superadio III Portable AM/FM Radio Review

RCA 7-2887 Superadio III Portable AM/FM Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you love AM radio and are looking for a radio that has fantastic reception your choice comes down to two radios: the ccradio plus and the GE Superadio. These are the best radios on the market for fans of talk, sports, Art Bell, Phil Hendrie, etc. Which one should you buy? I have both (the GE for my office, ccradio for home) so here is my take on the two. Both have nearly equal AM reception. At night, you can easily pull in stations from hundreds of miles away (some say even over a thousand miles away but this depends on where you live). There the difference ends. The ccradio has a lot of features that I felt I wanted in a radio. It has a sleep timer, accurate digital tuning, automatic timer that turns your favorite show on at a predetermined time, scan buttons, lighted dial, power cord (not bulky adaptor), weather radio (with auto alert), memory buttons, tv audio of the network stations. The only flaw is that it has a grab indentation rather than a full handle. They are a family business and take GOOD care of their customers. The ccradio company LOVES radio and loves people who share their passion. Is it worth the [$$] for the extras? To me it is. The Ge Superadio has a rotary - and inaccurate - tuning dial. This will drive you crazy if you do a lot of channel switching. Some people tape graph paper to the radio and mark where they found the stations - it is that inaccurate. There is no timer, no alarm, no weather, no tv audio, no lit dial, etc. The sound is better on the GE Superadio, though. The GE SUperadio feels cheaply made and probably won't make it through many beach or camping excursions. The GE Superadio is enormously sized - it is the size of a small attache case or TV! If you only want to pull in one distant station and keep your dial set to that station, get the GE radio. That is all you need. It has great, almost legendary, reception without any bells or whistles. On the other hand, if you love radio, need the extras, change stations a lot, want something sturdily built that will last a lifetime, want to explore the large number of AM stations that are out there, go out and order the ccradio with slightly better reception (see their website to order). I am a radio person rather than a tv person. I have radio playing all day (as some people have tv going on all day). I sleep to radio (and need that sleep timer). I would rather listen to a talk show than watch a sit com. I would rather listen to Coast to coast, Phil Hendrie, and Rush than watch another rerun of Frasier or Friends. If you are like me, do yourself a favor and invest in the ccradio. You won't regret it. P.S., the FM reception will be better than you are used to, also.
Bottom line: The GE superadio is low cost with no extras and big and bulky. The CCradio plus is expensive, has every extra you could want (except a decent handle), more sensitive but does nto sound as good as the GE for music.

Delphi SA10004 XM Radio SkyFi Home Adapter Kit Review

Delphi SA10004 XM Radio SkyFi Home Adapter Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
XM Radio and the Delphi equipment for the most part live up to the rave reviews:
=marvelous on long road trips, no need to fear moving out of range just when you've found something engaging
=sound quality generally equal to FM
=wide, wide variety of programming
But, I do have a tip and a concern. The tip:if you plan on using the home stereo adapter, spend the $20 for a Monster cable to connect to your amp or receiver! It took me two trips to the retailer to get this resolved. It's especially disappointing since big bucks have been invested in the technology and programming and in the last few feet the signal quality is degraded to an unlistenable level -- and you've got to believe that the "adapter kit" is a pretty high margin item for Delphi.Had they maintained the quality of the product maybe Mr. Johnson would have been happier.
The concern:I hope XM takes advantage of the opportunity to take radio programming to some new and creative places. There's quite a variety here, but much of it tends to become a choice about preferred "wallpaper" music. It doesn't look like we're ever going to get anything creative from commercial radio, and XM has vastly greater resources than Public Radio if they want to use them.
My system works great (now) and there's a lot of potential here. It's worth getting now and we'll look forward to more from XM.

Sansa Fuze+ 4 GB MP3 Player (Black) Review

Sansa Fuze+ 4 GB MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As humans, we sometimes tend to personify our gadgets. Having witnessed the phenomenon in others, I'm happy to see I'm not the only one (a psychologist could explain it better, but it probably stems from our post-toddler, invisible friend/stuffed animal days, but no matter). So if this little MP3 player could speak, I reckon it would probably say something like, "Hi there! I know I'm not as full-blooded as an iPod Touch or as sleekly designed as an iPod Nano, but I'll work real hard to make you happy. Honest!"

First, a bit of history: I've owned iPods since late 2003 when I bought a spanking new 15 GB third generation iPod. Back then, smart phones had yet to come of age and if you wanted a high-capacity MP3 player, Apple were just about the only game in town. It helped matters immensely that my iPod was so well constructed since I used it day in, day out for five years until it finally died and I replaced it with a fourth generation iPod Nano. That Nano sure *seemed* solid enough (what with its sleek, anodized aluminum body and all) but a mere year-and-a-half later it fell apart faster than Joan Crawford in a wire hanger factory (see "Mommie Dearest" for an explanation of that analogy). With hopes held high for an amazing sixth generation Nano, I balked at the rather stripped-down feature set and the tiny, nigh-unusable touch screen.

So, off a-shopping I did go.

Since Sony didn't appear to make a Mac-friendly Walkman, I opted to punt, snapping up the newly released Sansa Fuze+ (black, 8BG capacity). I'd known about -- and respected -- Sansa players for years as affordable and worthy iPod competitors, so this seemed the best available option. Whether consciously or not, SanDisk are filling a huge void in the marketplace right now caused by the absence of last year's multi-purpose fifth generation Nano (and as a student, I really, really needed its now long-gone voice recorder feature badly).

To define the negatives of this particular player: as many reviewers have pointed out, the Fuze+'s touch-sensitive interface can be a bit unresponsive at times and over-responsive at others. The GUI isn't anywhere near as intuitive as anything Apple could have designed. Furthermore, the industrial design is rather plain and the plastic is easily scratched (HINT: rub any scratches that appear on plastic with Brasso and a clean, lint-free cloth; after several minutes, it clears them right up -- promise!). That said...

Onto the positives: the sound quality from this thing is amazing -- rich and full! I've run battery tests only to have my jaw hit the floor when power usage on my unit clocked in at a WHOPPING 53 hours for 128 kbps MP3s and 30 hours for 256 kbps AAC files. This in itself is an astonishing discovery, particularly having come from the notoriously power-hungry iPod realm. This little fellow plays video beautifully, although the screen's visual "sweet spot" is at a slightly off-centre angle when watching a movie in Landscape mode. Also, it's got a voice recorder -- a good one --that uses the unit's incredibly wee, shockingly responsive built-in microphone. While the Fuze+ won't win any beauty contests, it is enough for me to say that it *is* solidly constructed, having already dropped it several times without so much as scratching it (Brasso time!).

I give this player a solid recommendation -- especially (way) over the current iPod Nano -- keeping in mind that it is still quite new and there *are* flaws. However, SanDisk seems to really care about their customers, listening to their concerns and working hard to iron out the kinks. Their Website support forums are a good place to go for advice, especially considering that by buying any new first-generation product, you're essentially signing up to be a Beta tester.

It just comes with the territory, folks.

Sony Bluetooth Wireless Transmitter for iPod (Black) Review

Sony Bluetooth Wireless Transmitter for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking for info on how well this works with headsets, I'm sorry to say that I don't own a BT headset (yet). This review focuses on the transmitter in conjunction with a Sony BT receiver that I use to connect my iPod to my home receiver, since that was the primary reason that I got one of these. But hopefully you'll still find something useful.

First off, Amazon's two sentence product description is a bit too brief, so here are some specs from the packaging:

Communication System:
- Bluetooth Specification version 2.0 + EDR
Output:
- Bluetooth Specification Power Class 2
Maximum communication range:
- Line of Sight approx 10m (30 ft)
Freqency band:
- 2.4 GHz band (2.4000 GHz - 2.4835 GHz)
Modulation method:
- FHSS
Compatible Bluetooth Profile:
- A2DP, AVRCP
Supported Codec:
- SBC
Supported Passcode:
- 0000, 1234, 8888
Terminal:
- iPod connector

Compatible iPod models (official):
- iPod nano 1st generation
- iPod nano 2nd generation (aluminum)
- iPod mini 1st generation
- iPod 4th generation
- iPod 4th generation (color display)
- iPod 5th generation (video)

Although the compatibility list does not mention it, this add-on definitely works with the iPod classic, because that's what I'm using. The terminal is the current standard 30-pin connector, so if your iPod is more recent than the above list, chances are that it will probably work... but I can only speak for the classic.CONTENTS:
The package comes with:
- iPod Bluetooth transmitter
- manual
One funny note regarding the packaging:I couldn't believe how HUGE the packaging was for such a small item!!The main photo on the package depicts an iPod with the transmitter cleverly placed in view right below the iPod photo, where it would plug in.It certainly catches the eye.USAGE:
It couldn't be simplerYou just turn on your iPod and connect the transmitter to the port, and in order to activate it, you set your receiving device into pairing mode and then hold down the button on the transmitter for about 7 seconds until the two devices are paired. That's it.SOUND:
Overall, I find the sound quality on the receiving side to be excellent.I base my opinion on headphone comparisons between:
a) plugging directly into the iPod and
b) plugging into my Bluetooth receiver unit
As far as I can tell, the sound is pretty much identical, although a bit lower in volume, but that may due to my Bluetooth receiver.

For reference, I'm using the transmitter in conjunction with the Sony HWS-BTA2W Bluetooth wireless audio transmitter/receiver as my Bluetooth receiver. Both these two devices support Bluetooth 2.0 and A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile). For audio comparisons, I used a pair of Sony MDR-V700DJ Monitor Series Headphones.

One important thing to note is that you cannot control the volume of the transmitted sound.I'm not exactly sure why that is, but it appears to be by design. All your iPod controls behave as they normally do and you can even move the volume slider up or down, however it has no effect on the transmitted sound. Some functions, however, do still affect the sound, such as "Sound Check", "Volume Limit", and all the "EQ" settings.Since these features still work, I'm assuming that the lack of volume control is by design. The volume output is the max allowed by the Volume Limit setting.

My only guess is that the volume control is to be used in conjunction with AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile), but I don't have such a device to confirm.I don't know if this happens on other iPod bluetooth adaptors, but I could see the inability to control the volume via the iPod becoming an issue if you want to use it with a BT headset (unless the headset has volume controls)RANGE:
The packaging states "Line of Sight approx 10m (30 ft)".I had thought that Bluetooth did not require line of sight, but Sony clearly states so and for the most part, it holds true for this unit.I have tested up to around 25 feet with clear line of sight and the sound remaind crisp and clear.Clothing also did not present any problems.I buried the iPod and transmitter under a pile of ski clothing with no effect.

But once you block the path with walls or other sources of interference, the signal will start to become choppy or completely cut off.Be warned that your body can also block the signal.Cupping my hands completely around the transmitter would pretty much turn the signal to crap beyond only a few feet from the BT receiver. In most cases, as long as I'm witin a one or two feet, the signal still comes through, but the more I block the signal and the further I go, the more the signal would degrade, as is to be expected.

As far as home use goes, as long as I'm in the same room and not actively trying to block the signal, I haven't had any problems.DESIGN:
The design is about as simple as you can get.It has a single big button in the center, which you can use for various functions (turning on/off, pairing) and a bright blue light which signals the unit's activities. It is completely powered by the iPod, so no extra power supply or battery is required.

I have seen similar Bluetooth attachments for the iPod which are little blocks the same width as the iPod.Personally, I prefer the small design of the Sony. One major factor that I like about it is that I can plug it into my iPod without removing it from its protective case.I use a leather casing by INCASE which only leaves me an opening for the 30-pin connector at the bottom.

My main pet peeve that I have about most block adaptors is that while they may blend better with the iPod in overall shape, there aren't any cases (that I know of) available that fit an iPod WITH attachments, so if you use a case and want to connect something, chances are you'll have to remove the iPod from its case before plugging in your accessory. The Sony might make for an odd shape, but for my purposes at least, it works better and I think that it still looks pretty slick.

One thing that Sony could have added, however, is a locking clip for the transmitter. The transmitter sits pretty snugly and doesn't feel like it'll fall out by accident, but it would have been nice to have that extra sense of security.CONCLUSION:
The unit is a bit pricey, but overall I'm quite satisfied with its functionality. The sound quality is good and for my purposes, I haven't had any problems with signal strength.

As an aside, my primary goal was to connect my iPod to my home speaker system.I was originally looking at the iPod Universal Dock, but found it to be completely worthless, since the remote control could only play/pause/skip prev/next and control the volume. For actually selecting music, I still had to go up to the dock in order to browse for my music. And who wants to get up to change music anyway?:)

Using this Bluetooth setup, I can now use my iPod as a fully functional "remote" (except for volume) and have my music come out of my main speaker system.I do wish I could have the option of charging my iPod while it's broadcasting (since the charging port is occupied by the transmitter), but the fact that I can keep my iPod in its protective case and the nice compact size and look of the transmitter makes for a decent tradeoff.Bottom line:If you have a nice home speaker setup, I totally recommend going this route!

**UPDATE 12/13/2007**
Just a few more quick notes and clarifications (as if this review wasn't long enough, eh?) since I've been using it for about a month now... and I still LOVE this device!

Usage:
I should clarify my above comment that it only requires pairing with your receiving device ONCE (like most BT devices). After the initial pairing you can unplug it and only plug it back into the iPod when you want to use it.If you're near your previously paired receiving device, all you have to do is plug the transmitter into your iPod and hit play, and the receiver should immediately pick up your audio signal. To preserve battery life, the iPod transmitter only transmits if you're actually playing music, which is pretty good.

Lack of volume control:
After having read other reviews for similar attachments, the fixed volume output appears to be normal. For my purposes, it would have been nice if I could have controlled volume directly from the iPod, but I'll live.At least I know that it wasn't necessarily a design-flaw in this particular device.

Trisquare TSX-BP NiMH Rechargeable Battery Pack Review

Trisquare TSX-BP NiMH Rechargeable Battery Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My original batteries lasted about a year of fairly constant use (charge/discharge). These new ones don't seem to hold a charge as long as the batteries that came with the radios. It took several charge/recharge cycles to get them to hold a charge for an appreciable time. If the original batteries that came with the radios worked so well, why don't these replacements equal their performance?

I might go to Batteries Plus to see what, if anything, they might have as an upgrade replacement. TriSquare STILL makes the best personal radio on the market though. It far surpasses the standard FRS radios that permiate the market. The range is better, the audio is better, the channel selection is, well, there is NO comparison.
FRS: 14
TriSquare: 10,000,000,000 (Yes, that's Ten Billion with a B) + the privacy of SSFH technology.
And it's only maybe $40 more than an average FRS! You can't beat this radio. Get the 300 series (mentioned above)for you and the wife and the 100 series for the kids. If the kids lose them they don't cost as much for the 100 series (1,000 channels vrs. 10 Billion for the 300 series).

This watch is pretty cool, adds to my already ever growing collection. I bought two of these as they have a 1.5 mile range and as I am divorced and live within that range my son and I speak all the time on it. The watch modes are great too.

Nady PMC-2X Driver-to-Passenger Motorcycle Intercom Review

I have instructed drivers in Time Trial events with this unit, and have found it very useful. This is the lowest price I've seen.

One word of caution though -- when shutting down, don't pull the headset out of your helmet, take your helmet off with the headset in it still and plenty of slack on the wires.Pulling the headset out of your helmet tends to weaken then seperate the wires in the earpiece, and this happens quickly.

3-pack WIRELESS REMOTE CONTROL OUTLET SWITCH 1200W 100f Review

3-pack WIRELESS REMOTE CONTROL OUTLET SWITCH 1200W 100f
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having purchased similar items from another manufacturer in the past, I was surprised to find that the item ships batteries not included. The range is also noticeably less than that of the competing product that I have purchased- I usually have to click the button two or three times just to switch the lights across the room. Also, the oversized outlet takes up two plug spaces. On the plus side, the product is much cheaper than competitors, considering that you get separate control of three different outlets with one remote. With the competitor's product, you'd have to buy three packages and juggle three remotes, so if you want separate control of multiple outlets from one remote, this is definitely the way to go.

Sirius Professional Vehicle Install Kit SIR-PVK1 Review

Sirius Professional Vehicle Install Kit SIR-PVK1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Sirius Professional Vehicle Install Kit is a "must have" for a clean, clutter free installation with direct connection to the vehicles electrical system. The entire installation took under an hour. Experience removing interior vehicle panels would be a plus.

If you are considering just cutting the plug from your Sirius radio and just hard wiring directly into your vehicles electrical system, beware! The voltage requirements for the radio are less than the 12 volts used in the vehicle. The only way to do a clean installation is with the installation kit.

Product Description:
Tired of paying the pros big bucks to install your car's audio equipment? Do ityourself with this Sirius professional installation kit, which includes everything you needto install a Sirius plug-and-play or portable satellite radio receiver in your vehicle.Outfitted with an FM direct audio relay, a hard-wired power adapter (dual voltage), anRCA audio cable, a universal mounting bracket, and a host of additional cables andmounting hardware, the kit is a must for satellite radio fans who want the best possiblesound while driving. The kit centers around the low-profile metal mounting bracket, which comes with a detachable swivel base. Simply mount the bracket to the dash orconsole, then slide the car cradle of your Sirius receiver into the slot. The kit works withjust about any receiver, including the Sportster, Sportster 3 or 4, Starmate, Starmate 3 or4, Starmate Replay, Sportster Replay, Sirius One, Stiletto 10 and 100, the S50, Stratus, and InV.
Listeners have two distinct connection options. The first employs the FM direct audioadapter, which plugs into the rear antenna connection of your factory or after-marketcar stereo. By connecting directly, you'll enjoy a better sound than provided by thereceiver's built-in wireless FM transmitter, with no static or interference to get in theway. The second option is to plug your satellite receiver directly into your stereo'sauxiliary input, provided it has one. The latter option further improves the sound, asusers don't need to rely on the FM airwaves at all to transfer the audio signal.
The hard-wired power adapter, meanwhile, works with both 5-volt and 12-volt vehiclepower sources (depending on which Sirius tuner you own). By using this hard-wiredconnection, you'll leave your cigarette lighter free to charge other devices, such as yourcell phone or personal DVD player. The adapter features both two-pin and three-pinconnectors, a pair of 16-inch wire leads used to supply power and ground, and a 2 ampfuse and fuse holder that go between the adapter's power wire and your vehicle'saccessory wire.
The professional vehicle kit requires a compatible Sirius car docking kit and is backed bya one-year warranty.

Product Description:
Stay safe while navigating the coastal waters with the Cobra MR F55 dual-power marine VHF transceiver. The radio, which boasts a selectable output power of either 1 or 25 watts (for short or long communication), lets you talk with other radios within at least a five-mile radius, and sometimes as far away as 25 miles, depending on conditions. It's an essential tool for communicating with marinas, the Coast Guard, other boaters, and commercial towing companies, all of whom can offer life-saving assistance during a crisis. And because VHF radios work on a party line, any boat that's within range can listen in and provide help, or they can relay the signal to a professional that's outside your range.
The MR F55 operates on any of the three channel maps established in U.S., Canadian, and international waters, while also picking up 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The latter feature ensures instant access to national All Hazards and weather warnings 24 hours a day, so you'll always know when a storm is approaching. And because it's nearly impossible to monitor the NOAA channels at all times, Cobra integrated an audible weather alert tone and visual alarm into the radio. Other safety-enhancing features include instant access to emergency channels 16 and 9 and a function known as Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which allows you to send a distress signal at the touch of a button or exchange position information with other boats or stations.
Furthering the MR F55's safety reputation is its GPS compatibility. When connected to a Cobra or most other GPS receivers, the MR F55 can send your GPS position to other boats in an emergency, or it can exchange position information with other boats or stations. This life-saving feature saves a ton of time in a crisis, as it helps rescuers locate your craft quickly and efficiently.
The device is a breeze to use, with a large, illuminated LCD display, backlit function keys, and a noise-canceling microphone with its own control buttons for crisp, concise communication. Boaters can also connect an outside speaker to the unit thanks to the external speaker jack. All this in a sleek, black, water-resistant chassis (it's submersible in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes). In addition, the MR F55 comes with both flush mount and surface mount kits, so you can install the radio in or on almost any flat surface using the supplied hardware.
The transceiver measures 6.25 by 2.25 by 7.125 inches (W x H x D) and carries a three-year warranty on parts and labor.
