I purchased these for a car caravan summer trip in 2008 where we would not have the use of cell phones due to some of the remote locations out in the western U.S.The claim of a range of 28 miles is absolutely ridiculous.Typically 1 watt = 1 mile under good conditions.I figured that even if I got ? of that range it would still be good, it was not.We have very poor communications car to car even when we were 200 feet apart.Broken and dropped transmissions not to mention poor battery life (even when I charged them every night in the hotel).I'm not sure how Uniden is getting away with the performance claims on this product.I was sorely disappointed with these and I'm a Uniden fan and have been for years.

I had purchased theBarbie Chat-with-Me Jelly Talkies Set of 2 - Pink for my girls for Christmas. The things had NO range and were clumsy to use and to top it all off they took expensive watch batteries. After finding these Barbie's going back.

These have a great range good clarity and although small in size are easy to use for my 4 & 6 year olds. And for added fun my husbands radios that we take on camping trips can be set to the same channels now its a 4 way conversation.

I recommend these to any parent looking for a walkie talkie type toy.Have fun with them, I know we will!

It works very well with all the talkabout radios I have. Only drawback is the clip started to break after 10 days of daily use in the Florida parks. When the clip breaks it gets annoying having to carry it in your hand.

Average Reviews:

My son recently purchased the cx190 and it was awesome. He took it to Canada and it linked up with his Canadian friends, who had various brands and models of walkie-talkies, had great rangeand clarity. I spotted these, the cx105 and thought "Oh, Gee, half the price, what a good deal." NOT ! I thought I would never get them out of the package, almost cut myself on the tough plastic, had to use heavy shears and rip and pull. Finally after getting them out I had to put in non included batteries. The non removable belt clip is so close I could hardly get the battery door open. I had to get my husband's help to get the door back on. After all that effort I was so disappointed in the quality, nothing near as nice as the Cobra cx190 which comes with rechargeable batteries and a wall charger. Cx190 are beefier units with other additional features. So, spend a little more and get a better set. I recommend the cx190 from my experience.

TriSquare TSX100-2VP eXRS Digital Two-Way Radio (Pair), Charcoal Metallic/Black Review

TriSquare TSX100-2VP eXRS Digital Two-Way Radio, Charcoal Metallic/Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The TSX-100 radio is simply one of the best short range 2-way radios available. It uses the 900Mhz ISM band (902-928Mhz range). And is full 1-watt.Uses spread spectrum technology (similar to CDMA Cell Phones:Sprint, Verizon Wireless, US Cellular, Cricket) which makes it JAM-PROOF and highly unlikely that anyone can monitor while using the best scanner radios.900Mhz band means easy penetration thru thick walls and buildings with dense materials concreate and metal. It is simply the best for Indoor-to-Outdoor or vice-versa comms. And has identical coverage with VHF when used for Outdoor-to-outdoor use.

The TSX-100 does not have all of the exra bells and whistles of the TSX-300 radio:

- 1,000 virtual channels (using FHSS)
- is compatible with all TSX-100 radios
- is compatible with all TSX-300 radios (below channel 1,000 ;
channels 0-999 allows interopability to any Trisquare radio)

(See my review of the TSX-300 for a list of some of the bonus
features on the TSX-300)

With the PRO features, there is one notable CON:

- Do NOT place the TSX-300s or TSX-100s too close to each other.
- They sometimes experience De-Sync issue when a unit nearby
transmits too close. So keep them 4 or more feet apart from
each other. This only occurs when too close to other Trisquare
radios. This does not seem to occur when other nearby radios
or cell phones are placed too close. So no need to worry about
MURS, FRS, GMRS or HAM radios are under 3 feet away.

At least 95-100% of all of the bad reviews or complaints about this radio is over this single flaw in the radio.Rule of thumb, keep the
TSX-300s and TSX-100s a minimum of 4 feet apart from each other at all times, and you will never have any problems at all.Simple right?

Even the TSX-100 is so much better than any MURS, FRS or GMRS radio.
900Mhz just has superior radio properties over all VHF and the rest
of the UHF band.900Mhz penetrates and bounces around inside buildings
better then any other UHF service. And certainly superior over VHF as VHF does NOT bounce well inside any buildings.Instead VHF gets knocked out of phase, and its wavelength mostly gets cancelled-out or worse yet ABSORBED into the building's materials:concrete, wood & metal. VHF is an OUTSIDE only band.UHF is a good inside and outside band.900Mhz has the best properties.FRS/GMRS operates at 462 & 467Mhz.Take 462 x 2 and that equals:924Mhz, which means that 900Mhz has a wavelength that is HALF that of FRS/GMRS.Which means none of the wavelength phase interference of VHF or even of the low-UHF at 462Mhz.Again, it boils down to superior in-building penetration.Thru Concrete, Wood & bouncing off of Metal.

Enjoy your TSX-100, enjoy the superior 900Mhz properties for indoor-to-indoor or indoor-to-outdoor (also vice-versa), or even outdoor-to-outdoor comms. Its FHSS full 1-watt of power will show its superior ability over all MURS, FRS & GMRS radios.

- MURS - VHF 2-watts ERP (Poor Indoor properties - not recommended for
any indoors use at all ; Any scanner can receive, no privacy)
- FRS- UHF 1/2-watt(Good Indoor properties - 1/2 watt max power)
Any scanner can recieve, no privacy ; some HTs have limited voice
scramble function)
- GMRS - UHF 50-watt (Good Indoor properties - 5-watt HTs are hard
to find ; Any scanner can recieve, no privacy ; some HTs have a limited voice scramble function)
- EXRS - 900Mhz 1-watt (Superior Indoor properties - full 1-watt HTs)
FHSS assures no scanner can monitor, wonderful privacy feature)

Product Description:
TriSquare has revolutionized 2-way radio communication with eXtreme Radio ServiceTM (eXRSTM). eXtreme Radio Service (eXRS) two-way radios use proprietary Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) in the ISM band (900 MHz frequencies). This FHSS system combines the power of digital technology with narrow band FM modulation technique. Merging the two technologies facilitates a radio communications system that maintains a narrow band base signal to ensure for maximum usable range within a given dB power budget, comparable to traditional fixed frequency narrow band FM radios, but with the added benefit of wide band digital security and privacy provided by the frequency hopping spread spectrum algorithm. Maintaining the information signal as narrow band FM modulation centered on discrete frequencies allows for a large pool of non-overlapping hopping frequencies to draw upon within a given section of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. The pseudo-random drawing of the hopping frequencies spreads the total signal power equally over the entire bandwidth of the RF spectrum used, which ensures minimal interference between many simultaneous, independent users. Interference Free is a major advantage that eXRS has over existing FRS and GMRS radios. Based on a contracted study from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of a major university, more than 100,000 eXRS users within talk range can enjoy uninterrupted communications. Whereas, FRS/GMRS quickly becomes unusable with just a few tens of users within range of each other. Bottom-line is that the eXRS two-way radios provide private communications in areas where FRS/GMRS conversations can be congested or impossible. Depending on which model you choose, your eXRS radio will have 1,000, 10,000, or all 10 Billion eXRS channels available for your use. Each radio offers Voice-operated transmission (VOX) for hands-free operation with headset compatibility.

Motorola On-Site RDV2020 2-Channel VHF Water-Resistant Two-Way Business Radio Review

Motorola On-Site RDV2020 2-Channel VHF Water-Resistant Two-Way Business Radio
Average Reviews:

Operates very well in a quiet or normal enviroment.Though distance wasn't quite put to the test due to parameters restraints. In noisey conditions unit was hard to hear and sometimes understanding was somewhat puzzling. The 2 channel capabilty limits privacy .Other workforces in area may have to share same channel causing undue confusion, I was able to pick up stray converations from unknown sources. The unit is big and bulky for this time and age. This is not for the working man. Other then that "They look real pretty wouldn't ya say ?"

Motorola Earpiece with Boom Microphone Review

Motorola Earpiece with Boom Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use a Motorola Talkabout T6400 in whats called an "Airsoft Game", much like paintball, but with a military simulation twist. Anyway, communication is a very important thing, thus we all use two-way radios. Holding the radio and carrying it in my hand just was not an option, as I use an airsoft gun that takes up two hands. I bought the T6400 with a clip and all, but needed a headset. I saw many products outthere, some ranging from $20-100. I was tight on money, so I decided to go with this particular item. For $10, or whatever it is, you can't really beat it.
The capabilities are as follows (especially if you are looking for the VOX feature)
PTT and VOX compatible with Talkabout? 270, 280, T289, T5100, T5200, T5300, T5320, T5400, T5410, T5420, T5600, T5620, T5700, T5710, T5720, T5800, T5820, T5950, T6200, T6210, T6220, T6250, T6300, T6310, T6320, T6400, T7200 Series, fr50 and fr60 radios.
PTT-only compatible with T5100, T5200, fr50 and fr60 radios are not VOX/handsfree capable, therefore, headset is manual PTT only.
On to the field testing and use..
After doing some prelimenary tests to adjust my volume and whatnot, I got out in a game. My teammates said they could hear me loud and clear, almost too loud they said, haha. I could hear them perfectly as well. However, the ear piece that hooks onto your earlobe would occasionally fall off, now I have a small ear which was probably the problem.
The VOX feature that I can use on my two-way works pretty well using this headset. It will pick up your voice almost everytime within a tenth of a second, and agian, transmit everything 'loud and clear'. Be careful when whispering those things other people aren't supposed to hear ;) it will pick up EVERYTHING. Whoopsies....
I would highly recommened this item for any type of "irregular" use. As far as using it in the car, or however else, I do not think it would be my first choice because of the bulkiness, etc.
The clarity is an A+, the price is an A+, the receiving earpiece gets an A, and the ear piece itself, well a "B" for falling off my ear.
Good Luck!

Midland XT511 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Emergency Crank Radio Review

Midland XT511 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Emergency Crank Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to think that there is tremendous quality control variability with this radio based on the wildly different reviews.

I'm a radio geek and have been collecting radios for the last 40 years. When I saw the ad for this Midland I just had to have it.I thought it would be a perfect addition for my camping adventures. The radio seems to be totally loaded with just about anything you would need.It has a GRMS/FRS 2-way radio, an AM/FM radio, a weather radio, a clock with alarm and even a 3 LED flashlight.Add to this the fact that it runs on both alkaline and a wind-up rechargeable battery!Wow.

Sadly, none of the functions work very well. Both the AM and FM reception are very subpar.AM reception could only receive the strongest stations and they bled over adjacent frequencies. Many stations that I could pick up on a cheap pocket radio could not be picked up on this radio.FM was worse, only picking up a couple of very powerful local stations.

Weather band worked, but only barely.I was able to pick up many more channels on a little Grundig/Eton wind-up.

FRS/GRMS radio functions were similarly mediocre to poor.

Cranking was more awkward than on other emergency radios that I have used including those by Freeplay and Grundig.

On a positive note, the LED flashlight is nice and the clock/alarm is also a nice feature. You also get a lot of accessories, including an external mic, both car and AC chargers and a carrying strap.

Overall, I was disappointed by this radio. The fact that others like it suggests to me that there may be a lot of variability between radios. However, in general, I would pass on this radio. There are many inexpensive GRMS/FRS radios that would do a better job.If you are looking for a good emergency broadcast band radio check out those made by Freeplay or Grundig/Eton.

Cobra MicroTalk CXR825 30-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Review

Cobra MicroTalk CXR825 30-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Among the brands of GMRS/FRS radios, Cobra is the only one I've found to use Li-ion batteries.Compared to other rechargeable battery technologies, Li-ion will last longer and weigh less.Cobra has three models in their flagship category: 925, 825, 725.I chose the 825 for a few reasons.

Compared to the 925, this model lacks the voice recorder and has lower battery capacity.Without the voice recorder, if you miss something, I think it's a matter of asking people to repeat their message.Although the 925 battery capacity is higher, the voice recorder increases the power draw, so it may offset and result in similar battery life. The main differences between the 725 is the capability to receive NOAA weather broadcasts; I believe the batteries and the outside form factor are the same.

They advertise different communication ranges (35, 30, 27) in miles.I'm skeptical and wish there were more truth in advertising. However, for casual users, you're probably within 5 miles. These types of GMRS/FRS radios do not work well inside cars unless you have an external antenna. If used properly, they work reasonably well.I've been able to communicate within 10 miles. For the purists, the 925 and 825 have three transmit power levels (5, 2, 0.5 watts) while the 725 has only two (5, 0.5 watts).

So far, I can think of only one drawback - I wish Cobra makes a car charger.Their website says you may purchase parts and build your own, just call them for wiring info.

Cobra MicroTalk CTX425 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio Review

Cobra MicroTalk CTX425 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio
Average Reviews:

I am writing this in the hope that it will help some other buyer's of this product.
There is a place on the belt clip to place a wrist strap. However, no wrist straps come with this model.I had wrist straps that came with my older Cobra 950DX model and transferred them to this model.

The reason I bought this model is that it had the longest advertised range that still used AAA rechargeable batteries. It does say in the manual to "Use only the supplied rechargeable batteries and charger for recharging your Cobra microTALK radio."Now I know why!I tried to use my duracell AAA rechargeable batteries that were fully charged. No lights came on the charger and the batteries would not charge.AAA rechargeable batteries should be interchangeable-right?The Duracell batteries are 800mah 1.2 volts and the supplied rechargeables are 600mah 1.2 volts. If you look at the batteries in the illustration, you will note that the bottom 3/8" of the battery is silver in color. This is a continuous wrap from the bottom negative terminal. On the lower left inside the battery compartment of the radios is a contact that makes contact with that lower 3/8" of the battery.Without making that contact the charger lights and charger will not work. You can wrap some aluminum foil around the one duracell or generic AAA rechargeable battery that makes that contact and everything works. I can only figure that Cobra tried to make everyone buy their OEM batteries for replacement.Personally, I think this is stupid. The advantage of the AAA rechargeable batteries is that they can be easily found and purchased if needed.

The radios work although I have not done any distance range tests.I also wish they had the vibration alert on this model.I can live without it, but I did like that feature on my old 950DX model.

The AAA battery problem has been overcome. The reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is the omission of the wrist straps. It just seems like all of the manufacturers are cutting every corner they can to save pennies.

Motorola Talkabout MR350R - Two-way radio - FRS/GMRS - 22-channel (pack of 2 ) Review

Motorola Talkabout MR350R - Two-way radio - FRS/GMRS - 22-channel
Average Reviews:

I purchased 3 sets of these. They are the most powerful units I was able to find in the "for general public consumption" category. What I mean by that is these are not commercial or military grade units, and so their reception will not be quite as powerful as those, but as far as commercially available, relatively low-cost units go, these are probably the best out there.

The radios are excellent in just about every way.I've owned them now for over 9 months, and my children use them daily to keep in touch with us in the home. The children are 8 and 10 years old, and radios are our way of knowing where they are, and staying in touch with them as they play in the neighborhood. When we need them to come home we can call them home.If there is trouble, or a "stranger" nearby, my children can call home to tell us about it.In such a way, we keep tabs on our kids and we gain enormous peace of mind from knowing they can reach us with the push of a button. We live in Central Florida (which is basically flat land) and we can get about 1 to 1.5 miles out of them in suburban areas. In one case, I was able to get a signal out to about 2 miles in a clear cut area. The key to remember is these radios are "line of sight", which means if there are trees between you and the receiver, it degrades the signal strength substantially. My neighborhood has many trees, so the reception is limited to 1 to 1.5 miles. In open areas, you can get substantially longer range (for example in a desert area, or from a mountain top. Also, weather plays with the range.Heavy rain will degrade the reception.

My advice is don't look at the published range on the box.I doubt 30 miles (or whatever) will ever be do-able, except on a perfectly clear, calm day on the Bonneville Salt Flats from an elevated platform. We thoroughly tested these radios under all kinds of circumstances. You get 2 miles out in a regular suburban middle class neighborhood, and you hear nothing. If your area is filled with hills, peaks and valleys, then this will also limit reception. When my kids dip down a small hill, and there are land formations between the reciever and the sender, the signal goes to zero.Around houses and trees on otherwise relatively flat terrain, the signal still reaches out to 1.5 miles. In one part of our neighborhood, there is a cul-de-sac that drops down 50 or 80 feet down (a lower part of the neighborhood) and the signal back there is zero.So just keep in mind this is LINE OF SIGHT.If you can draw a straight line between the sender and the reciever without any physical land mass or giant building obstructing your view, you can get several miles range out of it.If there are buildings and trees, the range is inside of 1 mile.Just trees, about 1.5 miles. The other thing I love about these radios is the NOAA Weather Alert Service. At any time, if there is a weather alert in your area, the radio goes right to the NOAA radio station, and transmits the relevant data, no matter what you are doing, even if you are on a different station. As long as the radio has the power "on", the weather will interrupt and announce the alert.Even while we are at home during our normal routines, on nights when we are expecting bad weather, we keep the radio turned on by our bed, and if a tornado or other alert is being issued, the radio comes to life and wakes us up.Living in Central Florida, we get tornadoes from time to time, and the radio has woken us up to get informed about the situation. We get up turn on the news, and find out where the tornadoes are to see if we need to prepare. This NOAA radio feature is fantastic.I would have given the radio a "5" star, but we lost a volume cap for one of our radios, and after a phone call to Motorola we discovered NO SPARE PARTS are being sold or shipped out to support these. The staff answering these calls were not professional, and poorly trained, generally disinterested, detached, and obviously bored with their careers as phone attendants/inbound customer service representatives. For such an otherwise respectable company, I was disappointed with the phone support on this product. The good thing is Motorola will replace the radio no questions asked through their warranty program. It is interesting to note the radio is made in China, and the poorly trained phone support people make a point to tell you about it repeatedly when they talk to you.

This radio does what you need - not what you don't.The reception is good and sounds good. The calls I have placed were received "Loud and Clear".It is compact and comes with any accessory (rechargeable battery and two chargers, waterproof bag, bracket, clip) that you could want.It also runs on AA cells if your rechargeable runs down.

It does not have Digital Selective Calling which is not something I care about. It is not waterproof outside of its bag - also not a concern to me the way I use it.

I am a 25 year boatowner and I think the radio is great.

I bought the same model CXT 450 which the only difference being sold by another store. This radio does what I wanted it for, just communication around my property. My cell phone has some dead areas around on my property. This has so far surpassed my expectations. However do not expect 22 mile distance out of it unless you are on top of a mountain talking to someone on top of another mountain with no obstacles in between. I barely get a mile in heavy Forest. One thing that I was unaware of when I bought it was the weather channels on this unit. They are very clear and an extra benefit to the radio if you are in the outdoors. So i think it has been a very good purchase. I might add this unit is less expensive at Amazon than where I purchased it.
