Cobra MicroTalk CXR725 27-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio Review

Cobra MicroTalk CXR725 27-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I was a kid, I had a pair or 2-mile two-way radios. They barely worked a half mile apart, even in a clear, flat area. These 27-mile radios are roughly the same, ten years later. On an open highway, when I could still see the vehicle in front of me which had the other radio, I was unable to communicate with it. Somewhere around a half mile these radios become useless. That obviously disappointed me, because I could have paid half as much and gotten the same range in reality.

Other than a total lack of range, the digital readout and neat features like ringtones for sending a call notice make these pretty slick radios. Good size and weight, and the square shape is less likely to slip out of your hand. Batteries last long enough to not be a hassle.

MURS TWO-WAY BASE STATION RADIO Review

MURS TWO-WAY BASE STATION RADIO

At least to my knowledge. With only a wire Jpole antenna ( Thats inside) I have spoken to friends over seven miles away clearly!
Now Remember I am higher then they are, Much higher. I ordered a 5/8's wave antenna for the roof. This should give me much greater range . I love these simple to use transmitters and plan on buying two HT's when I have the extra cash. Even my 3 year old neice has figured out how to answer me when away from home. So I am betting the wife can also :)

Uniden Atlantis 250BK 16-Channel VHF Waterproof Two-Way Marine Radio Review

Uniden Atlantis 250BK 16-Channel VHF Waterproof Two-Way Marine Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got this for my small boat, it was on sale at West Marine and listed as 'waterproof' (who wants a boat radio that's not waterproof?).Takes multiple power sources, does dual watch, weather band, and the price was right.

After it charged up it worked great. We used it several times for coordinating activites without incident.

Until, while helping trailer the boat, my friend slips on some seaweed and this 'waterproof' radio hits the water. It was in MAYBE a foot of water for half a second, but that was enough. The PTT button was stuck on, the button would physically push and release but the circuit stayed active and the radio kept transmitting- salt water had shorted the PTT switch.
Turning the radio off and on was no help- it refused to power up with the PTT switch held down (just made a beeping noise).

Further research reveals that this unit is rated JIS4.According to [...], JIS4 means 'splash resistant'.
Most of the other marine portables are rated JIS7 (same as IPX7)- can be submerged under 1 meter (3 feet) of water for 30 minutes with no ill effects. Some are rated JIS8 (indefinitely submersible up to mfr. specified depth).

Many of the other units also float, and most aren't that much more expensive than this one.

You might check out the Uniden MHS75, which is actually cheaper, smaller, and is JIS8 rated. It also has SAME weather radio alerts, which this doesn't.

I'm giving this 2/5 stars because I think a boating radio, to be used on the water, should be more than just 'splash proof', especially when nearly all the competition is JIS7.And had me and my friends been stuck on the water instead of on the boat launch, the unexpected failure of this unit would have put us in serious trouble.

Motorola TalkAbout EM1000 20-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Review

Motorola TalkAbout EM1000 20-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio
Average Reviews:

We've got lots of these radios at our farm and few of them last more than 6 months.Battery issues and button failure are the main issues. As I understand it, the biggest problem is the chargers (sold separately) are not "smart" chargers, meaning that you can easily over-charge the battery and dramatically shorten its life. All that said, when the walkies do work they are great, the sound is clear, etc on our 12 acre farm. They are SOOO much cheaper than the professional next step up that we're continuing to buy them frequently to replace the broken ones, although soon I hope to try professional & hopefully more durable units. The belt clips and the charger build quality are shockingly poor.

MURS Hand Held Two-Way Radio, M538-HT Review

MURS Hand Held Two-Way Radio, M538-HT
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We currently use three of these handheld units and plan to purchase a fourth. Here in rural southwestern Ohio, where there are lots of hills and woods, the 1 watt output of these radios provide a one mile range reliably. While traveling in convoy on long and unobstructed stretches of highway, the range is greater. They are used infrequently and have provided communications for five weekend long events over the past two months. For well under one hundred dollars, I did not expect much. These units exceeded my expectations.
While the manual that comes with the radio is not very detailed, vender support is outstanding. I had a question regarding charging the batteries and received a reply within one business day. They recommended charging for 24 hours when new or totally depleted and overnight for normal daily use. These radios use commonly available rechargeable AA batteries and not the expensive type found on many amateur and commercial handheld radios. In other words, no special order for replacement rechargeable batteries. Also, at need, regular alkaline batteries may be used. (Attempting to charge the alkaline type batteries will damage the unit) The rechargeable batteries supplied work surprisingly well. We keep our transmissions short and to the point and regularly operate for two days and more per charge, especially if we turn them off for the night. These radios are extremely easy on the batteries while receiving and only draw the batteries down appreciably while transmitting.
I hope to acquire the matching Dakota Alert MURS transmitters to provide wireless and portable security at remote locations. Allowing us to monitor the area around the vehicles or camp while in the woods etc.
These radios are not water resistant nor do they provide military grade shock resistance. These radios are not "industrial strength", but neither is the price. They do provide all five of the unlicensed MURS frequencies while many others only provide one or two operating frequencies. They are affordably priced with great customer support from the vendor, Home Controls / Home Security 4 Less. In summary, good value for the money.

The M538-HT is a hand held MURS transceiver that will receive alert signals from the MURS AlertTM transmitter and also can be used for two way voice communications between other MURS transceivers. The HT is capable of communicating over distances of several miles*. The FCC also allows you to use MURS without a license. Although other radio services require a license, MURS is license free. When an alert signal is received from the MURS AlertTM transmitter the HT will sound off with the voice of the alert signal and will also display an alert icon as a visual display that an alert signal has been received. This has many different applications for small businesses, farms, security guards, outdoorsmen. Anyone who needs to have real time monitoring and two way voice communications will benefit from MURS.*Actual range will vary depending on the local terrain.

Cobra HHROADTRIP 40-Channel CB Radio Review

Cobra HHROADTRIP 40-Channel CB Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased two of these units for our emergency "go" kits and regularly carry one in the truck.

I like the size and features where you have both CB and weather channels, the hot swap between services is handy as is the CB channel 9/19 hot key.The noise filter does work and gives better reception under some conditions.

Some limits I've found: The antenna designed for use with the unit in CB hand held mode limits communications to under a quarter mile line of sight in my case and the magnetic vehicle antenna will go about half a mile.I'm looking for a better mast antenna for the vehicle.

The weather channel reception is comparable with my scanner.

One thing that I didn't realize when I purchased the radios, and this would have made a difference to me, the A/C charging adapter is NOT part of the package and must be bought separately so if you want to stay off of the battery charger merry-go-round I recommend buying the charger when you buy the radio.Be aware also that the power cord provided for use in a vehicle does NOT charge the radios batterys.

What I really don't like and almost caused me to return the radios: These units use 9 - "AA" batteries, I purchased 18 rechargable batteries - about 5 bucks each, I hadn't purchased the chargers with the radios and ended up buying the biggest stand-alone battery charger I could find locally, all of the chargers I found work in paired sets and mine handles 8 at a time, so 9 is a real pain.

Tom

Product Description:
Cobra's aptly named HH Road Trip 40-channel handheld CB radio is ready to travel anywhere you do, bringing access to 10 NOAA weather channels and a four-mile range from its 4 watts of power. The onboard SoundTracker system reduces audible noise and interference by up to 90 percent over non-SoundTracker devices. Whether you're using it for emergency backup or convenient conversation between vehicles or camps, the HH Road Trip brings you quality CB communication.
High/low power switch reduces power consumption, extending battery life during spells when high power is not required. The unit operates on nine AA batteries (alkaline or Ni-Cd; batteries not included), or runs off your vehicle battery through the supplied DC cord with cigarette-lighter plug. An included magnet-mount antenna ensures maximum range.
The Citizens Band lies between the shortwave broadcast and 10-meter Amateur radio bands and was established by law in 1949. The Class D two-way communications service was opened in 1959. FCC regulations permit only "transmissions" (one party to another) rather than "broadcasts" (to a wide audience); advertising is not allowed on CB Channels because it is considered "broadcasting." Citizens Band (CB) Radio operators are not required to obtain an FCC license to operate their CB equipment or provide station identification. Nevertheless, an operator of a CB radio station is still required to comply with the communications act and with the rules of CB Radio Operation.

2.4GHz Digital Wireless Baby Video Monitor System With Night Vision -- 2.4" Color LCD Screen (Two-way Radio communication) Review

2.4GHz Digital Wireless Baby Video Monitor System With Night Vision -- 2.4' Color LCD Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was searching for a good video baby monitor for weeks. I had an audio-only baby monitor, but it's a pity I could not see the condition of my son, e.g. his sleeping position, whether the blanket is in place, etc.Unfortunately, most video baby monitors are either analog (interference) or without the talk-back feature. My old audio-only monitor is analog and it has quite a bit of interference, but it has a good feature: two-way radio for talking back to the child -- a feature that I feel very important.

This 2.4GHz Digital Wireless Baby Monitor System with Night Vision meets all my expectations, at a very affordable price comparatively. It works immediately out-of-the-box, no interference, clear audio and video, good night vision, and I can talk back to my son.The voice activated alarm and video works pretty well. Only one small complaint: it wakes up from sleep mode and turns on the video/audio for only a brief moment (like 5 seconds) which is too short, it would have been better if the duration is like 30 seconds or configurable; but it's not a big deal - I can always turn off the sleep mode immediately with a touch of a button.

I highly recommend this baby monitor.

By buying this set I was intended to use it for three essential communication scenarios:
*Rider to passenger full duplex communication.
*Receiving and placing phone calls.
*Streaming music to rider and passenger from the same MP3 device.
The device is claiming to be capable of doing much more, like communication with third rider, GPS connection, excellent battery live, etc.Maximum working range claim to be impressive.
The devices I have tried to use with this set: Nokia E71, Blackberry Curve, IPod with SONY Bluetooth Transmitter, I also tried my Lenovo Laptop. There result is the same for all devices I tested:
*Paring is excellent.
*Phone calls not perfect but expectably OK on both ends.
*Streaming music from MP3 device or phone is horrible. I really mean it. The soundis so bad, you cannot use this set for music playing. And this is not a speaker's problem it is the actual device problem with Bluetooth A2DP protocol stack.
*Streaming music to rider and a passenger at the same time from one player is not possible. Unless you have a phone or MP3 player capable of paring and use A2DP profile with two devices at the same time.Let me know if you can find something like this.
I did not test all of the other functions of this set may have, but I doubt you get a very good result.
I also wish it could be smaller. It is on the big side, plus you have huge antenna sticking out of it.
If you have a plan to buy this set, think twice. Sure the price looks attractive but you probably will end up spending more money at the end by buying this garbage then threw it away. You will be lucky if you can get refund for this. Some previous reviewer mentioned "poor" sound quality. I wish he would be more clear on this. If you attempt to play MP3's you probably will not recognize the song you are playing this is how bad the sound is.

Uniden GMR1235-2 2-Way 12 Mile 2 Pack GMRS/FRS Radios Review

Uniden GMR1235-2 2-Way 12 Mile 2 Pack GMRS/FRS Radios
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those Uniden GMR1235-2 2-Way 12 Mile Radios are so compact, you can easily hold both in one hand (see my Customer Image). They are also very inexpensive (around $20 for a pair), so one may think of them as just toys for kids, But in fact they can be used by kids and adults alike - provided that you start with the correct expectation.

First of all, forget about the manufacturer's claim of '12-mile' range. That is only possible under the most optimistic test condition (transmitting from one hill top to another with clear line-of-sight). In an urban environment, you are lucky if you can get one or two miles. With this limited range in mind, this walkie talkie set can still be very useful in many places (such as in a National Park, or a large shopping mall). The sound quality is quite decent - similar to an AM radio.

Next, this thing is a battery-eater if you use disposable alkaline cells (three AAA per radio). The manufacturer claims an average battery life of '20 hours'. But again, this is under a special test condition of '5/5/90', which means 5% transmit, 5% receive, and 90% idle time. The device consumes different amount of current during different operation modes, as shown below:

- While transmitting: 400mA
- While receiving: 50-100mA (depending on volume level)
- While idling: around 15mA.

If you do a lot of transmission, a set of alkaline cells is likely to run flat in less than two hours (because alkaline cells are very inefficient at high current). My advice is to buy some good quality AAA rechargeable cells, such as the Sanyo Eneloop or Rayovac Hybrid, to power those radios. That way, not only will you save money on batteries, you can even get longer run time per charge.

Uniden MHS 350 2-Channel VHF Waterproof Two-Way Marine Radio Review

Uniden MHS 350 2-Channel VHF Waterproof Two-Way Marine Radio
Average Reviews:

I bought this radio for safety purposes during a kayaking trip in Glacier Bay National Park.I didn't have a dry bag for it, and kept it around my neck at key points during the trip where it was exposed to rain and seawater.

While I can't say I used the radio extensively, it functioned well when I needed it.We had a brown bear wander into our camp, and I used the radio to communicate with a nearby touring boat so it could keep us advised of the bear's position while we broke camp. The boat's communications came through crisply and they appeared to have no trouble hearing us.The radio also held its charge through four days of kayaking, being turned on and off intermittently. In short, I bought it in case of an emergency and it worked perfectly when I needed it.

Product Description:
Stay safe while navigating the open waters with the Uniden MHS 350 handheld two-way VHF radio. Specifically designed for marine applications, the radio receives all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, keeping you fully up to date on all the latest oceanic activity. At the same time, the radio offers 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you'll hear about approaching storms before they hit. And thanks to the radio's Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.) weather alert, you needn't worry about receiving bad weather news from outside your region. Instead, S.A.M.E. employs a FIPS code that syncs with your specific location, so if a nasty wind or rainstorm is gathering in your immediate area, you'll know, but you won't be bothered by storm warnings 100 miles up the coast.
As with any good handheld marine radio, the MHS 350 is waterproof and rugged, with a compact design that fits easily in the hand. It's also a breeze to browse through the channels thanks to the scan function, which starts on the lowest programmed channel and progresses to the highest. And when in scan mode, the radio automatically actives the Triple Watch Plus function, which monitors the emergency channels (16 and 9) along with a user-selected channel and the weather alert. Knowing that emergencies typically don't announce themselves in advance, the Triple Watch Plus function is a must for safe boating. Users also have one-touch access to channels 16 and 9, just in case.
When you're not using the radio, simply drop it in the charging cradle, which will keep the rechargeable NiMH battery pack operating at full capacity. Additional features include backlit keys, a backlit display, a key lock, a power save mode, two power modes (5 watts and 1 watt), and such portable extras as a belt clip and wrist strap. The MHS 350, which measures 2.7 by 5.8 by 1.68 inches (W x H x D), is backed by a three-year warranty.

Cobra LI-7200-2 WX VP Micotalk GMRS/FRS 22-Channel 27-Mile Range 2-Way Radio with 10-Channel NOAA Weather Radio (Pair) Review

Cobra LI-7200-2 WX VP Micotalk GMRS/FRS 22-Channel 27-Mile Range 2-Way Radio with 10-Channel NOAA Weather Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had reasonable expectations for two-way radios like the consumer-grade Cobra Li7200 when I bought them.Based on my research, I knew that the whimsical claims on the bubble packs of 10's of miles of range (27 miles in the case of these radios) were pure fantasy. In urban areas, a mile or maybe two of range is the best you get; in more open areas, a little more.I also had a good idea of how the "privacy" codes work (they don't keep other people from hearing your broadcasts - they allow you to tune out other people), the GMRS licensing requirements ($85/five years to the FCC to use the higher power GMRS frequencies, and the basic operation of two-way radios in general (they aren't cell phones - you can't listen and talk at the same time, you have to pause after pressing the transmit key, the voice quality varies with transmitter power, distance, and intervening obstacles/terrain).

Based on my limited experience with these radios, I'm not disappointed. They worked fine on a recent vacation to a remote lake area.We used them to communicate between our rental house and the beach, whilehiking on trails in the mountains [big kids and little kids move at different paces], between vehicles while caravanning to/from an off-road park, and to keep in touch while off-roading.While off-roading, one of the other vehicles had Motorola consumer-grade GMRS radios, and the Cobras and the Motorolas interoperated just fine, including both channel numbers (same channel number to frequency assignments) and CTCSS "privacy" codes. We probably never used them more than 1 to 2 miles apart, but we weren't going for any distance records.

The NOAA weather radio capability of the Cobra LI7200s was a key item for me.I wanted to be able to listen to NOAA weather service broadcasts because the area we were in was known for rapidly changing weather, and we needed to plan trips (hikes and beaching) without resorting to television news or non-existent Internet service.About the only weather radio features not found on these units is a weather radio "scan" (so I manually ploughed through the 10 weather frequencies until I found the local station, which wasn't hard because they broadcast continuously), and a "NOAA Weather Alert" (automatically monitors for NOAA WX ALERT signals) - this last feature is appealing but wasn't available on the Cobras.

There seem to be two different approaches to batteries for consumer-grade GMRS radios; some take "AA" size batteries that can be rechargables or non-rechargables, others (such as the Cobra) use proprietary Lithium-Ion rechargables. If you know you can stick the radios in the charging cradle every day or two, the proprietary rechargables seem to be a good option - they hold lots of power but are very lightweight. If you want the ability to go to non-rechargable backups when you are away from civilization, get a radio that takes them instead.

There appear to be three top-brand consumer-grade FRS/GMRS radios - Motorola (actually made by a company called GIANT who license the Motorola name for this product), Midland, and Cobra. All three offer several models, mostly varying in size/output power (bigger size generally more power) and a few other features such as the NOAA weather radio capability. The Cobra LI7200s are the biggest/most powerful Cobras I found; I didn't find the size to be inconvenient nor the weight to be too much, and I wanted the maximum power I could get.If the Midland GXT900 had been shipping back in June 2008, I might very well have gotten those instead, as they have a higher rated power output registered with the FCC and they have the NOAA WX ALERT function, but I'm not unhappy with the Cobras. Some folks like the Motorola, others pan them.I wasn't sure I would like them because despite Motorola's excellent reputation with business radios the consumer-grade GMRS radios aren't really Motorolas.

For anyone thinking of using the Cobra with an external microphone/speaker, I will point out the the manual says "When using an external speaker/microphone accessory on channels 1-7 or 15-22, your microTALK radio will only operate on medium or low power."Since channels 8-14 are FRS channels that operate exclusively on low power, this means that these radios won't operate on high power with an external speaker/microphone accessory. This isn't a concern for me.

I didn't use the VOX (voice-activated transmit) or memory functions.I did use the channel scan functions to find clear channels (not a problem where we were located).

If you get a GMRS radio and you plan to use the GMRS frequencies, please go ahead and get properly licensed, then follow the radio rules about sharing channels.Have fun and save money on your cell phone bill!
